Byline Festival mega early-bird bargain

Pippingford Park hosted the new Byline Festival and there's a mega early deal on for next Aug.

I went along to this new festival at Pippingford Park near Uckfield (the same place that hosts Elderflower Fields) a few weeks back and I thought I’d share some pics as there’s a mega early deal on for its return next Aug.

Byline is billed as ‘a riot of independent journalism, ideas, comedy and free speech’. Don’t let the journalism bit put you off – you don’t have to be a hack to go along – but expect debates on free speech, the effects of developments like Trump’s presidency and Brexit, besides other fun trappings like comedy and theatre.  There was a small family area with a climbing wall this year whch is being expanded for next, there’s free camping, and a little spa to massage those sleeping-in-a-tent aches. The views from the site are fabulous.

I saw John Cleese hosting Bad Press Awards with help from Andy Hamilton, dropped in on an a couple of debates and an  impromptu quiz from the BBC’s John Sweeney based on his Panorama Scientology documentary, then danced along to 8Os stars the Blow Monkeys headlining in the Red Carpet Lounge. John Cleese is a big fan of the festival so should be involved next year as well.

This is not the kind of festival you go to get wasted, it’s a relaxed, thoughtful place. The atmosphere picked up in the evening when we flitted between bands and some feminist stand-up dissecting the infamous ‘Legsit’ front page, stopping to scoff a top burrito from one of a row of decent food stalls.

The limited ‘Abnormally Early Bird’ tickets are currently £45 for the whole festival (from £7.50 for children). The full price for a weekend ticket near the time will be £120. The festival will run 24 – 27 Aug next year. Find out more and book here: bylinefestival.com
