Five of the best films shot in Sussex
OMG. Guess who's been spotted filming a new movie right here in Sussex? Read on for the lowdown plus 5 blockbusters filmed locally.
Teenage screams at the ready! None other than Harry Styles has been seen around Sussex, including outside Brighton Dome, filming his new movie My Policeman.
If you can steer your mind away from Mr Styles in uniform for just one moment, My Policeman is an adaptation of a novel by Bethan Roberts in which the One D crooner and his on-screen missus Emma Corrin (who shot to fame in The Crown) meet and fall in lurve on Brighton’s iconic coastline in the 50s.
But the course of true love never ran smooth. An at-the-time illegal gay affair becomes a part of their life together, before jealousy threatens to shatter it.
Hazza’s been spotted in uniform filming in and around Brighton and Hove. So far the crew have been seen in Hove’s Holland Road, at the Royal Pavilion, outside Brighton Dome, in Brunswick Square and in Belcher’s Cafe in Montpelier Road, as well as in Worthing and Tarring, where he and Emma were spied smooching outside The Vine pub.
With such an A-list lineup and saucy plot My Policeman promises to be a must-see when it’s released – no date as yet but it’s tipped to hit the big screen next year.
Can’t wait for My Policeman? Here are five other big-screen hits that were filmed (at least in part) in Sussex:
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Oh, R-Patz. We’re still not over Cedric Diggory’s untimely demise in the fourth of the Harry Potter saga (apols if that’s a spoiler but, er, it’s been out a while). But did you know that part of this Oscar-nominated, BAFTA-winning instalment was filmed in Seaford? The part where Harry lands using the Port Key was filmed in sunny East Sussex. Go on, you know you want to re-watch to look out for Robert – I mean, Seaford.
Remember the scene in 2017 blockbuster Wonder Woman where the team arrives at the gala of the Ludendorff? That was filmed at Arundel Castle, one of the largest complete and inhabited castles in the UK. Arundel Castle is no stranger to the big screen, having doubled up for Windsor Castle in the 1988 Doctor Who serial Silver Nemesis. Bit before Muddy’s time, that one. Ish.
This 2020 war movie starring former Bond Girl Gemma Arterton was shot in East Sussex using locations including the famous Seven Sisters cliffs near Eastbourne. Arterton stars as Alice, who takes in an evacuee played by Dominic McGreevy and comes face-to-face with her troubled past. There’s always a troubled past, isn’t there….
Seaford once again features in this beautiful adaptation of Ian McEwan’s novel starring Kiera Knightley and James McAvoy, in which 13-year-old Briony accuses her sister’s lover of a crime he didn’t commit and changes the course of several lives in the process. The dreamy Cuckmere Haven, the mouth of the River Cuckmere between Seaford and Eastbourne, also features.
The Inbetweeners Movie
From the sublime to the ridiculous. Gatwick Airport plays host to the four horny, socially-challenged teens as they jet off on their holidays in search of clunge in this laddish, slapstick comedy.
