Pull on your tan tights and dust off your triple salchow – ’tis the season to fall on your bum again. The pop-up ice rinks in Sussex and nearby are back and there’s plenty of fun to be had with or without kids, on or off the ice. Snacks to full meals, booze and even full party catering are available at many.

Royal Pavilion, Brighton, 2 Nov – 19 Jan 2020
Back and powered by solar and wind energy this year, The rink sits under the onion domes of Brighton Pavilion, colourfully lit by night. The large covered cafe/bar terrace opens till late, with mulled wine, snacks, burgers, cassoulets and more available. There’s no charge for spectating from here if you just want the atmosphere. Kids can get their balance on a separate rink with penguin skating aids.
Worthing Ice Rink , Steyne Gardens, Worthing, 9 Nov – 23 Feb 2020
Worthing’s rink is in a giant marque with regular sessions for over-fours, while toddlers can get on the ice in special quieter weekday slots. There are children’s skating courses and private lessons by arrangement. You can warm up with hot drinks and snacks in the café and even use the venue to host a children’s party.
SKATE Tunbridge Wells, Calverley Grounds, Kent, 15 Nov – 5 Jan 2020
Calverley Grounds in Tunbridge Wells will once again be transformed into a winter wonderland. There’s a chance to meet Father Christmas on site on certain dates, plus live music nights. You can even get a chance to try Bavarian Curling this year. There’s also food and drink on offer in the spectator’s area.
Ice Skating on The Prom, Bognor Regis, 21 Nov – 5 Jan 2020
Ice Skating on The Prom is back with a 30 x 20 metre ice rink. Along with a children’s rides, Christmas market huts, a German style swing grill (got to find out what that is), and a bar, there is plenty to keep everyone entertained.
Crawley Ice Rink, Tilgate Park, 23 Nov – 5 Jan 2020
Take a break from Xmas shopping and take a spin on this covered rink. It all happens in front of Smith and Western at Crawley 2019. Wheelchair users welcome in all sessions, carers go free. Penguin and Panda skate aids. You can also book a party here.
Portsmouth Guildhall, Hampshire, 23 Nov until Sun 5 Jan
Fast becoming a bit of a foodie spot, The Guildhall Square in Portsmouth becomes an alpine resort this year, complete with a covered rink and gallons of Glühwein. Sessions (an hour per person), run from 10.00 – 20.00 Sun through to Wed and 10.00 – 21:15 Thurs through to Sat.
Winchester Cathedral Ice Rink, Hampshire, 21 Nov – 5 Jan 2020
Beside the cathedral but under a clear roof, enjoy a weather proof skate around a giant Christmas tree. There’s a Christmas market on the same site until 22 Dec and you can pop into the cathedral, where Jane Austin is buried. Check out the lunchtime, student and parent and toddler deals.

Skate at Somerset House is tying-up with Fortnum & Mason again to give us a Christmas shopping arcade and foodie treats like sweet and savoury fondues in an Alpine-themed lodge. There are also Skate Late DJ nights and opportunities to take lessons. There’s a skate and exhibition all-nighter on 7 & 8 Dec and on New Year’s Eve, £50 tickets (£70 with skating) get you entertainment from the House Gospel Choir with a full band and DJs and access to the riverside terrace to watch the London fireworks.
