At the drive in! Outdoor cinema across Sussex this summer

Can't remember the last time you watched a movie on anything bigger than an iPad screen? Rev up your motor and relive your American teenage dream at these Sussex drive-ins this summer.

Loxwood Drive-In Movies, Loxwood Meadow, July 9-22

Nobody puts Loxwood in the corner! Normally the home of swashbuckling medieval jousting festivals and jazz events, Loxwood Meadow will turn drive-in cinema this summer with a series of movie favourites kicking off on July 9. Sound will be provided through your car radio and there’ll be a food and drink order service on-site. The line-up includes classics like Pulp Fiction and The Matrix, family winners including Finding Nemo and the Lego Batman Movie and of course, Dirty Dancing. Go on, have the time of your life.

Secret Cinema at Goodwood, July 10-31

Cult movie company Secret Cinema, who razzle-dazzled the pants off everybody with their screening of Moulin Rogue in 2017, have teamed up with the ultra classy Goodwood Estate for a summer of flicks to be enjoyed from your trusty Nissan Qashqai. Diehards will be pleased to see that Moulin Rouge does feature, although all but the July 30 showing have sold out. There’s a good mix of family faves like Mary Poppins and The Lion King, superhero capers including Guardians of the Galaxy and Black Panther, and more grown-up offerings include Fight Club and Reservoir Dogs. Expect leave with stars in your eyes and Haagen-Dazs in your belly.

Dusk & Duchy Drive-In, Pulborough and Steyning, West Sussex, various July and August dates

We’ve got chiiiiiiiiiiiiillllllls, they’re multiplyin’, at the thought of catching Grease on the really, really big screen from the front seat of the Muddy-mobile. Dusk & Duchy are bringing this and other movies including Rocketman and Rush to the Toat Cafe on the A29 just outside Pulborough, and Wiston House in Steyning. Beep beep!

Cinestock, South of England Showground, Ardingly, July and August dates

Roll up at the South of England Showground for a summer of flicks, from family favourites Dumbo and nostalgia-loaded Back to the Future, to comedy with Bridesmaids and classics like The Blues Brothers. Oh, and Grease and Dirty Dancing, obvs. Order diner-style food and drink delivered direct to your (car) door too.

Movies and Music, Chichester Festival Theatre, August 28-31

One for the diary. All being well with our good friend Covid, Chichester Festival Theatre and Chichester Cinema at New Park are working together to create a drive-in cinema at Northgate car park over the August Bank Holiday weekend. The Movies and Music Weekend will see a range of family-friendly popular and classics alike screened, with sound through your car radio. Programme and tickets from July 30.
