The Sussex Ox
Muddy says: Home-reared organic meat and knockout views from a large garden make this historic family pub a special find
Boasting one of the most attractive garden views in the land, the Sussex Ox near Polegate and pretty Alfriston sits under the Wilmington Giant, so it’s a particularly good choice for walkers.
The secluded pub also has a great foodie provenance, with its own organic farm raising beef, lamb and pork and growing potatoes. There’s a choice of steaks and chops of course and usually a burger on the menu and of course it’s a natural choice for a Sunday roast. Those less meat inclined can enjoy the likes of curried mullet, beer battered pollock or chestnut and kale risotto.
The interior is traditional, with wood cladding, patchwork curtains and vintage farm pictures. It has been owned by the same family for 70 years (check out the 1940s pics on the website of their thatched Austin Seven!).
Regular music nights enliven proceedings, and in the warmer months, events spill out onto a decked area and into the large garden itself – look out for BBQs and the like show casing that home-reared meat.
For families, it’s worth noting that not only is there plenty of outdoor space for youngsters, it’s a handy retreat after a day at nearby Drusillas.
