Nine of the best Sunday roasts to order in

This grey weather is begging for a slap-up Sunday roast you haven't had to cook yourself. Tuck in with a takeaway from these Sussex pubs.

Plate with sunday dinner with gravy pouring on top

The Snowdrop Inn, Lindfield

A hearty Sunday roast from the Snowdrop Inn is the perfect tonic for a cold, grey day. Think slow-cooked, rare topside of beef, pork belly with homemade puffed crackling or a cashew and butternut roast, all served with homemade Yorkies, rosemary roasted potatoes and heaps of seasonal veg. Kids are catered for too, although if you order them a child-sized portion, whose leftover roasties will you hoover up afterwards?

The Royal Oak, Midhurst

The Royal Oak has shown super adaptability over the last year, with a heated outdoor area for Tier 2 (ah, remember Tier 2?) and now a stunning Finish At Home service. The Sunday roast box for two or four features such delights as lemon and garlic spatchcocked chicken and rolled Sussex belly of pork with sausagemeat, apricot and sage stuffing, as well as Scotch sirloin of beef. All served with all the trimmings and there’s puds on offer too. Fancy something less formal? Try the pit stop drive-thru for burgers, tacos and woodfired pizza or choose from the regular takeaway menu.

Skylark, Eastbourne

This lovely independent restaurant and cafe does a great line in comforting Sunday roasts. Choose from slow-roasted shoulder of Sussex pork with apple sauce, or wild mushroom, chestnut and spinach wellington, with all the trimmings and red wine gravy. The main takeaway menu is packed with deliciousness too, so get stuck in.

Jeremy’s Restaurant, Borde Hill

The lovely Jeremy’s weekend roasts are exactly what the doctor ordered for these trying times, sumptuous slow-cooked shoulder of lamb with garlic and rosemary or roast pork belly with apple sauce, both served with all the trimmings, natch. The wider fine dining menu plus cafe fare from Cafe Elvira are both worth a look too.

Sussex Pass at The White Hart, Wadhurst

If you really want to push the boat out, you can order not one but two Sunday meals from Sussex Pass – a Sunday brunch including bottomless drinks (now that’s a challenge) or a Sunday roast. Or both! Choose from treacle cured sirloin or slow roasted gammon served with all the trimmings plus proper gravy, or go all-in with a Sunday Feast for four, either whole roast chicken or treacle cured rib eye.

RoastHost, Brighton

What a fab idea – a bespoke roast dinner takeaway service! It was set up last year by foodie pals Glen and Mike, who have more than a decade of experience working in the industry across the South East. Choose from complete roast dinners (including veggie and vegan options because this is Brighton, after all) rotisserie and carve at home options including free range chicken and rare sirloin, and add heaps of extras. There’s puds on offer too and you can click and collect or have it delivered to your door. High end and welfare standards, delicious and delivered in recyclable, compostable packaging – tick, tick, tick!

The Swan Inn, Lewes

Grab yourself a Pub in a Box packed with comforting classics like salt marsh leg of lamb, free range chicken, loin of pork or choose from not one but three veggie options, all of which can easily be made vegan. Served with delicious trimmings like roasties, cheesy cauliflower and leek bake, and Yorkshire puddings. Order a pud to go along with it too and you’re all set for a blissful Sunday.

The Crown Inn, Cootham

Located on the A283 between Pulborough and Storrington, this lovely family-run inn serves roasts to take away all week long – because you never know when you might want one! Hearty pub fare, plus a standard takeaway menu and plenty of delicious puds too.

The Green Man, Partridge Green

Takeaway roasts from The Green Man are lighting up social media and word has travelled as far as Lincolnshire, apparently! Choose from dry-aged roast Scotch sirloin of beef, rare breed Tamworth pork or half a roast Banham chicken with apricot, sage and onion stuffing, or go for the Green Man combo of beef and pork. All served with cauliflower cheese billed as THE best (natch) and proper trimmings. Kiddies, veggie and other options also available.

Next time could you include The Beresford, [Elmer] who do a big carvery takeaway/delivery for £10?
So big, there’s enough meat to heat up or spice up next day.
    It’s deliciously memorable.

    Kind regards
