Mother’s Day meals for an at-home celebration

We're all au fait with the lockdown celebrations drill by now. This Mother's Day, bring the fun home with a takeaway breakfast, afternoon tea, cafe lunch, restaurant meal or Sunday roast.

Say it with scones, jam and clotted cream – add fizz for a grown-up treat.

The Grand, Brighton

The Grand’s offering has been voted the best afternoon tea in Brighton. Think traditional done very well – finger sandwiches, fruit scones with jam and clotted cream, and a range of sweet cakes and tarts. For something more substantial, choose from a range of takeaway menu options and for orders over £30, quote MUM for a free gift from the Natural Spa Factory.

Love & Rocket, Worthing

Order a slap-up afternoon feast with the option to add fizz, cocktails or ‘hard’ hot drinks (that’s boozy hot choc to you and me)! The Mother’s Day menu includes a buttermilk scone with clotted cream and jam, finger sandwiches with fillings such as traditional cream cheese and cucumber and hot smoked salmon, and a range of sweet and savoury baked goodies. The dark chocolate mousse cake sounds divine. It’ll all be beautifully packaged along with some unique museum collection tin plates. Free local delivery, gluten-free, plant-based and dairy-free options also available.

Metro Deco, Brighton

This special version of afternoon tea from this kitsch Parisian-style salon in Brighton contains everything you need to enjoy the Metro Deco experience at home. Choose from the classic menu, vegetarian or vegan, and why not accompany with a gift like a bottle of fizz, bath bombs or a classic bottle of Brighton Gin? All afternoon teas feature a range of hearty sandwiches and bagels, goji berry scones with jam and cream, and heaps of fancies and sweet treats.

Joanna’s Boutique Tearoom, Storrington

Order Mum a feast of sandwiches, cheese straws and Joanna’s famous Welsh Rarebit crostini alongside a selection of handmade desserts and patisseries and, of course, scones. There’s a free gift for Mum too and you can also add flowers and a beautiful Bombay Duck teacup and saucer.

Bracklesham Bay Tea Rooms, East Wittering

The Mother’s Day offering from this lovely tea room, known as ‘the gateway to Bracklesham Bay’, includes dainty finger sandwiches, quiches and sausage rolls, crudites and dips, a trio of mini cakes and chocolates and scones, jam and cream. To drink, choose from a mini bottle of Prosecco, a Pimm’s, a local craft ale or a soft drink.

Oeuf Cafe, Hove

Pick up a homemade box for Mum stuffed full of brownies, cheese scones, sandwiches, truffles, meringues and much more. Veggie options available on request.

Cafe Rust, Brighton

Start the day with a takeaway breakfast from this Preston Road cafe. Tuck into croissants, cheese scones, homemade granola, fruit compote, savoury muffins and sweet slices including a truly stunning-looking brownie and cookie slice topped with roasted marshmallows – sign me up, pronto.

Kaya in the Park, Horsham

Pick up a Graze Board, full of delicious treats and snacks like premium meats, artisan local cheeses, homemade pitta with dips, marinated olives, roasted nuts and fresh fruits. Ideal for day-long snacking and nibbling, or for something more substantial, go for a Kaya Roast. Choose from sous-vide beef with rosemary, or squash and mushroom pithiver, with all the trimmings. Follow up with a strawberry and Prosecco cheesecake.

East Beach Cafe, Littlehampton

Muddy hasn’t stopped thinking about the tiger prawns with garlic and chilli she had at East Beach Cafe last year, and they’re on the menu for this Mother’s Day too, along with a range of other seafood and fish options. Treat Mum to a takeaway or lunch on the beach. Booze and puds available too.

Crabshack, Worthing

Another great choice for fresh fish and seafood. The kiosk at Crabshack will be open for takeaways as normal and pre-orders are being taken for Mother’s Day. Expect a small but delicious menu of seasonal, fresh, local fish and seafood dishes.

Cafe Elvira, Borde Hill

A great choice for upmarket cafe fare, Cafe Elvira in the gorgeous Borde Hill Gardens has a delicious menu of takeaway options including individual tarts, pasta, fish and game dishes, and sweet puddings and treats.

Laura Spurgeon

Pitch Restaurant, Worthing

This gourmet four-course finish at home box from MasterChef winner Kenny Tutt’s restaurant Pitch has South Downs lamb rump as a main course, served with potatoes dauphinoise and pea and mint ketchup. Veggies can go for the thyme-roasted celeriac option. The dessert – rhubarb and custard Eton mess – sounds pretty special too. Order yours with a paired wine – everything you need for a MasterChef quality evening, at home.

The Welldiggers Arms, Petworth

The popular Pub At Home service returns for Mother’s Day with a delicious menu featuring salmon en croute, Sussex charmer cheese straws, chicken liver parfait and a lychee and rose tart. Upmarket and classy – just like Mum!

Wild Flor, Hove

The Mother’s Day weekend supper box from Wild Flor features lamb, anchovies and marjoram served with new potatoes, along with broccoli and blue cheese soup to start and a steamed lemon and vanilla sponge for pud. You can order yours to come with a perfectly paired bottle plus cocktail, if you fancy it.

The White Hart, South Harting

Choose from a traditional Sunday roast or a range of pub classics from this pub and inn in tranquil South Harting. Think comfort food done beautifully well – glazed ham hock, luxury fish pie topped with buttery mash, and favourites like fish and chips and burgers. Starters and desserts also available and all orders include a free gift for Mum.

Albourne Estate, Albourne

To save you the faff of ordering separate gifts Albourne Estate have put together a selection of flowers and wine – choose from the peachy-apricot shades of the Dea bouquet teamed with a bottle of Sussex rose, or go all-out with the Persephone bouquet, celebrating Spring and womanhood, paired with a bottle of vintage sparkling. The bouquets have been created by Brighton-based florist Honest Woman.
