Dotty about polka dots!
We're going dotty over the return of an old favourite print - welcome back, polka dot!
Recently, I wrote that I’d had quite enough of leopard print (god, the hate mail!) and was instead embracing polka dots as my pattern of choice for 2020. The humble spot, popularised by style icon Minnie Mouse, is absolutely everywhere this coming season. I like how it adds low-key interest to your look without being too shouty.
Warehouse have lots of pleasing options, including this blue and black spotty top (£36) and this chic monochrome midi dress (£59). Or you could treat yourself to the red and white jumper (£75) from & Other Stories, below, for Valentine’s Day (look closely and one of the spots is actually a heart). Also at & Other Stories, I sniffed out this elegant cream blouse with spots (£95). I’d pair it with smart trousers or a leather skirt for work and then jeans at the weekend.
Summer wedding upcoming? You’ll be the best dressed guest in this dreamy blue and black wrap dress, below, (£175) by Essential Antwerp aka the fashion editor’s under-the-radar label of choice.
Why stop at clothes? Polka dot nail art is so easy even a beauty div like me can do it – check out this excellent Superdrug tutorial. And we can’t talk about polka dots without mentioning Yayoi Kusama, the 90-year-old Japanese avant-garde artist and undisputed polka dot queen. (Have you ever seen one of her shows? They are totally nuts, in a good way.) Yours for £200 is a Kusama pumpkin sculpture from the Tate shop – at last, I’ve been looking for one of those for ages! Or you can settle for a pair of her tea towels (£45) to make drying up that frying pan slightly more on-trend.
