Gotta Have It!

These cool, concrete bricks and planters double up as eco-friendly bee B&Bs - yes really, that's a thing!

I feel a warm glow and frankly a little pleased with myself when I see bees buzzing round my flowers knowing my ad-hoc raids on the garden centre are actually doing a bit of good for the planet. Now I’ve discovered I could be going one step further and setting up bee B&Bs – yes really – so our little fuzzy friends can live on site and err improve their work-life balance.

Check out  Green&Blue. The award-winning, Cornish makes stylish, design-led products that help support the wildlife in your garden. My favourites are these cool, concrete bricks and planters, which double up as bee B&Bs (try saying that after a few glasses of vino)!

These holey little hotels are designed to offer nesting sites to the declining solitary bee population – the guys who don’t live in hives. Without wanting to harp on about it – bees are super important to world food production (among other things) and many species are endangered, so creating a welcoming garden for them is a really good thing.

The bonus of solitary bees is that they are non-aggressive, as they don’t have a queen or hive to protect, so it’s safe to encourage them into the garden, even if you have a veritable menagerie of pets and kids. And if you want to be an especially good friend to the bees, plant some pollen-packed flowers in your Beepots, like sedum, lavender or verbena (here are a few more ideas).

Green&Blue’s Bee Bricks look great placed among the plants (the ones above are at the Eden Project) bringing a little industrial chic to your patch or they can be incorporated into walls — worth considering if you’re planning an extension or conservatory. They also make Bee posts, which look chic in urban green spaces or incorporated into architectural landscaping. The various bee blocks cost from about £18.75 to £50.
