Sussex wine direct to your door
It's farewell to Dry January and hello to 'don't mind if I do' February. Here's how to get the best bottles delivered to your home.
While bars and restaurants remain closed for the foreseeable, it doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a glass or two (or several) at home. And the good news is, there are some fabulous local wine bars and shops throughout Sussex who will deliver direct to your door. So you can enjoy your vino from the comfort of your favourite armchair while also supporting our local businesses. Cheers to that!
Hennings Wine, West Sussex
With 60 years of history and expertise since inception as a delicatessen in Pulborough, the team at Hennings definitely know their wine. Choose from the excellent selection on their website, order as much or as little as you want, and it’ll be delivered direct to your door the following day (excluding weekends and Bank Holidays, so plan ahead). Stocking up? Delivery is free for orders over £100.
The Brighton Wine Company, Brighton
Bon viveur Chris knows his wine and founded the Brighton Wine Company to share his knowledge and passion with like-minded folk. Deliveries locally are free on Thursdays and Fridays, and Chris is usually accompanied by official BWC dog Chase – wine and dogs, what could be better than that?
South Downs Cellars, Hurstpierpoint and Lindfield
Owner Lucy and her team only stock high-quality wines from small, family-owned vineyards so you can be sure you’re drinking the very spirit of local indies. Free delivery locally – may we recommend the Home Schooling Survival Kit, because lord knows most of us need it.
The Secret Cellar, Wadhurst and Forest Row
This award-winning family-owned indy now totals four shops, including two in East Sussex that are offering free local delivery, hurrah! Expect interesting and unusual bottles you won’t find in Waitrose – many produced by small local indies.
Alteus Wines, Crowborough
Husband and wife team Alastair and Teresa set up Alteus wines after careers in finance and insurance. Local delivery is free for orders over £50 so you might as well stock up. As well as wine, choose from a small range of local artisan ciders and spirits, and Harveys of Lewes beers.
The Fine Wine Importers, Lewes
Yes, you could just load up on two-for-a-tenner Hardy’s at Tesco, or you could check out some of the artisan, independently sourced wines from Lewes-based Fine Wine Importers. From Sussex sparklers to delicious reds from the Languedoc, they’ve got you covered, with free local delivery to boot.
Albourne Estate, Albourne
We’d rather be at Albourne in person enjoying a tour of the stunning South Downs vineyard but failing that, we can at least order in boxloads of the vineyard’s Sussex tipples for home delivery.
Bolney Wine Estate, Bolney
As well as award-winning English sparkling, white and red, you can order hampers and boxes of gourmet goodies direct from Bolney, perfect for a special occasion (like Valentine’s Day, perchance? Hint, hint). If you’re stocking up, delivery is free on orders over £100.
Butler’s Wine Cellar, Brighton
Now into its fifth decade, Butler’s has aged like a fine wine itself and proudly lays claim to the title of Brighton’s oldest independent wine retailer. Local delivery is free for orders over £40 and there are currently some great deals on bottles for Valentine’s Day – snap ’em up while they’re knocked down!
Stopham Vineyard, near Pulborough
If you like white wine, this is the one for you. Winemaker Simon Woodhead trained at Plumpton College and planted up 21,000 vines in 2007. Stopham’s 15-acre south facing vineyard produces a gorgeous range of whites and sparkling, and delivery is free! Minimum order is six bottles, which frankly isn’t nearly enough.
