Lusophile Portuguese homewares

Snap up these cheerful rugs and other accessories to give your home a touch of Portugal, via Battle, Sussex

I’ve visited Lisbon and Porto in the last few years and beyond the pastel de nata custard tarts, for which I have a bit of an addiction, something that really excited me was the quality of the Portuguese homewares.

There are so many cool shops there now I spent a fair bit of time browsing and buying various accessories. Now, you don’t need your passport to get some of that style for yourself as a Portuguese-themed online store called Lusophile has been launched in Battle.

I particularly love these colourful rugs with a much-needed hint of summer about them, perfect for cheering up a lounge or kids’ room. They remind me of watermelons and Fab ice lollies!

Lusophile was launched last June by Emily Hedges who has been busy sourcing homeware, gifts and accessories. Lusophile actually means someone who likes the Portuguese language and culture – who knew?

Portugal is particularly famous for its ceramic tilework and its cork and there are contemporary examples of both on the site.

Ceramic coasters, £33 for a set of six

Teacups, £17 a pair

If you associate cork with Seventies wedges and tablemats think again as this lightweight material is used for all sorts of other things besides, like rucksacks and this yoga mat.  An old yoga teacher of mine had one just like it and I borrowed it once – so much thicker than my rubber one.

Lusophile also sells men’s fashion and women’s swimsuits, some of which are on sale at the moment, plus toiletries – including donkey milk soap! – and food like fig jam, honey and pretty loose leaf herbals teas –  sadly no pastel de natas!
