Famous London art shop comes to Brighton

If you’ve spent much time in London, even on the odd day trip, you’re bound to have encountered Cass Art. The original shop is on Charing Cross Road, slap bang at the entrance to Leicester Square and just along from The National and Portrait galleries – so you can get all fired up by the Old Masters then rush in to buy paints and canvas.

The company – run by the same family behind the Cass Sculpture Foundation at Goodwood, near Chichester – has just opened its first South Coast store in Brighton’s Lanes and there’s a launch day with juicy discounts coming up.

Before you come over all, ‘the only thing I can draw is my breath’ let me tell you it’s worth knowing about whether you’re arty or not as it’s a great bet for original present ideas for adults and children.

I would have loved all this stuff as a kid

I did art up to A level but, to my shame, have barely picked up a paintbrush since, so I got all nostalgic as the store manager Stuart Bassett (all the staff are artists themselves) showed me around. I found myself sighing over old friends like cotton paper and gouache paint.

They do some really good deals on certain quality brands and there are also plenty of things to entice the hobbyist. How about getting up on the South Downs with one of these dinky pocket paint boxes and a postcard pad?

These clever pens (as modelled by Stuart) release paint as you press the end… rather like good ol’ YSL Touche Eclat concealer.

There are the, now ubiquitous, adult colouring books and things too for crafts. Even diddy little people for architects’ models.

Great for card making and school projects

The shop will adapt to suit local needs, adjusting types of stock according to demand from Brighton’s many arty types. There are long-term discount cards for students and teachers and Stuart’s keen to forge links with arts groups and promote local creative events.

The Brighton store has been open for a few weeks but this coming weekend sees its official launch, with treats from Propercorn and The Breakfast Club and some lovely discounts to celebrate. Pop in Saturday 19 or Sunday 20 March and you’ll find an extra 10% off everything. Plus, if you’re one of the first 1,000 customers to spend over £10 you’ll win art materials worth over £40, which is not to be sniffed at.
