Boy, are the people of Petworth lucky. As well as artisanal deli food from The Hungry Guest and world-class exhibitions at Newlands House Gallery, there’s the fab-u-lously good E. Street Bar & Grill to pull up a chair at after a long day. (They’re all part of the Petworth Places family, as it happens).

The perfect blend of class and casual, E. Street is an airy, sophisticated dining space in a 17th century building. It dishes out beautiful, seasonal plates of locally-sourced food and expertly-mixed cocktails, yet feels just as perfect for an impromptu meal as for a full blown, decked-out wedding party — which they of course do, and do with aplomb. It’s something about the vibe of the place: buzzy and unfussy, even though everything’s really rather beautiful. (Safe to say that we, with our mud-splattered stilettos, appreciate a place that knows how to nail relaxed style.)

As well as being pretty as a picture, the town of Petworth is also surrounded by flourishing farms (and a rather enticing 45 wineries), so E. Street Bar & Grill makes prime use of local ingredients. The menu is that trendy breed of elevated British, which is to say it includes Middle Eastern, Spanish, and French flavours, whilst also firmly championing the triple-cooked chip. The cocktails are either seasonal or classic, and always beautifully balanced. Honestly, you’re hard-pressed to order a dud. We’ve, rather valiantly, tried.
