More than just your run-of-the-mill motor racing weekend, Goodwood Revival is a full-blown celebration of the most glamorous bits of the past: glinting retro cars, tailored jackets, festooned bunting and perfect pin-curls. Based on the Goodwood Estate just outside Chichester, this year the festival takes place 16-18 Sept and is all set to be a proper, guaranteed knees-up.

It by no means does things by halves. Firstly, the fact that there’s something for everybody: world-class racing of priceless cars by past and present champions, a water-tight and wildly fun vintage dress-code, a carnival recreating the 1951 Festival of Britain — frankly, it’s too much to list in one sentence. Here’s some more: Dig for Victory style horticulture celebrations, a glitzy vintage car boot sale, a retro high street right out of a film set, a rock ‘n’ roll ballroom, and (blimey!) spades more on top of all that.

Secondly, there’s the fact that Goodwood Revival commits. Modern cars are forbidden within the circuit on race days, and the dress-code is strictly 40s-60s, with ‘Best Dressed Competition’ judges out on the lookout for the most authentic looks. If that stresses you out, don’t worry: it’s not obligatory, though it’s far more fun if you do, and there’s guidance on how to put together your outfit online. You can even book yourself in for a hair / barber’s appointment at one of the site’s retro salons.

What else to know? Well, kids go free, for one thing! Three of our favourite words in the English language. There are also camping options in the surrounding fields, and when hunger strikes there’s a whole slew of top-quality restaurants on-site, as well as festival street food stalls.
