Parkminster Candles, Hurstpierpoint

Beautiful candles, reed diffusers and bath products hand-poured in the Sussex countryside

As Krystyna Patey says of her indie candle-making business, not many ‘cottage industries’ can claim to have actually started in a cottage – and be named after one – but Parkminster Candles is a fabulous rural start-up with character and history.

The cottage in question is a picture-perfect brick affair in the grounds of one of the oldest monasteries in the UK, near Horsham, and no doubt the cottage garden of herbs and flowers came as inspiration for Parkminster’s imaginative scents.

Krystyna started out making body scrubs from her kitchen table after finding it hard to find reasonably priced home fragrances and bath products. Parkminster now creates candles, reed diffusers, room sprays and bath products including bath salts, scrubs and soaps. The operation has grown, but is no less artisan, with workshops in Cornwall and Sussex. The ethics have also stuck – it’s all about natural products, made by hand. Everything they make is vegan, not tested on animals and beautifully packaged in recycled and recyclable materials.

The candles are made with essential oils and soy wax – we love the Ocean and Meadow varieties, which sum up just those environments, and the more quirky options like Tomato Leaf or Bonfire – evocative of classic moments in the English seasons.

In its rustic brown paper or glass packaging, the products make elegant gifts, from the generously proportioned bars of soap to the boxed room sprays (English Garden has to be smelled to be believed!) and the vintage style diffusers.

The environment is high on the agenda – as well as being 95% plastic free, Parkminster has recently become the UK representative for Candela Living, which advocates use of reusable ceramics and reducing glass waste in the candle industry. Pretty and guilt-free – what’s not to love?
