Muddy says: This compact racecourse backed by the South Downs is a hidden gem. Make a day of it with a meal on site or hire a venue with a view for a big bash.
In pretty surrounds in the East Sussex countryside, between Ditchling and the county town of Lewes, Plumpton is a hidden racing gem. It’s one of the smallest courses in the country, at just a mile long, which means you get a close up view of the action wherever you are.
There are 16 National Hunt races a year between September and May and Plumpton is renowned as a ‘nursery ground’ for stars of the future. Look out for family days at Easter and in September and Ladies Day in May when there’s extra entertainment to enjoy.
The racecourse is super easy to access as the course is right next to Plumpton train station and parking is free. Advance tickets are always cheaper so it pays to book ahead.
Dining and celebrations
Make a proper day of it with lunch and afternoon tea in the Paddock Restaurant – on the first floor of the Sussex stand, or the seasonal Marquee Restaurant on the lawns beside the final furlong.
For special occasions and other events hire a hospitality suite or the director’s box. If you’re planning a wedding or other big bash you can book out the whole marquee restaurant which seats 300. You can even tie the knot in the Parade Ring!
Membership – with various discounts and benefits – makes a great gift. Plumpton is also happy to put together gift packages for tickets, meals or betting vouchers.
