The Ship Inn, Rye

Muddy says: In Insta-worthy Rye, this family- and dog-friendly pub with rooms is a good choice for dedicated foodies or those seeking a weekend break.

Wood floors, beams and shutters give something of an old galleon feel to the Ship Inn in Rye which was established way back in 1592 and has a past as a smugglers’ hangout.

It’s now related to the Hush Heath vineyard over the border in Kent and promotes English wine on its menu.

A great stop for foodies, breakfast choices include Wealden Smokery smoked salmon eggs royale, while locally caught fish and Romney marsh lamb feature on the lunch and dinner menus along with vegetarian options with an original twist.

Sourdough sandwiches and fries are available in the bar and there’s also a children’s menu with a main and drink for £6.

Stay over

Upstairs, the eleven rooms include Nespresso machines and TV with Sky, four of them allow dogs, and if you are staying over as a family there’s a suite with a sofa bed.

Emerge in picture-perfect Rye with its cobbled streets and antique shops. The annual jazz festival in August and a scallop festival in February are among many reasons to make a weekend break here and lovely Camber Sands are around 10 minutes drive away.

Look out too for The Ship’s bargain midweek deals.
