The Curlew, Bodiam

This award-winning former coaching inn just outside Bodiam in East Sussex is under the stewardship of the team behind The Small Holding just across the border in Kent, brothers Will and Matt Devlin.

Named the Good Food Guide’s Chef to Watch 2020, Will trained under Gordon Ramsay and has poured his passion for food and its ability to bring people together into The Curlew.

Expect rustic, relaxed modern British dining and long wooden tables full of sharing platters everybody can pile into and enjoy. Food is served tapas-style as and when it’s ready, and you’re encouraged to order more of whatever you like. An extensive drinks list features local sparkling wines, spirits and aperitifs.

The perfect choice for an unhurried lunch or dinner with friends and family, either inside the tactile, neutrally-toned inn itself or outside on the terrace.

Head over to spectacular Bodiam Castle for a walk around the grounds and to admire views of the moated castle itself, or stop by Rudyard Kipling’s old home Bateman’s at Burwash. Incorporate into a day trip to the coast at Hastings or Winchelsea Beach, or pop over the border to Kent and Go Ape at Bedgebury.
