The Royal Oak, Midhurst
A gorgeous destination pub with a huge garden, serving sumptuous gastro fare and drive-thru offering American-style comfort food.
Frankie and the team took over this gorgeous country pub in 2020 – what a year to buy a pub! And yet the Royal Oak under its new stewardship has really cemented itself as part of the community, as well as the most lovely destination pub.
Set in the heart of the South Downs, with a pretty and substantial outdoor space, it’s ideal for families, couples, walkers, runners, cyclists, horse riders, big groups…the list is endless, that’s how versatile the cosy inside and picture-perfect garden are. Dogs and kids are welcome, and well catered for, as are those with specific food requirements, allergies and intolerances.
In the last year the Royal Oak has turned itself into a Drive Thru serving classic American diner-inspired comfort food as well as milkshakes and hot drinks, delivered fruit, veg and ready meals to the vulnerable members of the community, taken part in Eat Out to Help Out, set up a fabulous heated outdoor marquee complete with fairy lights and blankets to comply with Tier 2 regulations, and launched a hugely popular Finish At Home service for Sunday roasts and special occasions, on top of a regular takeaway menu. Whew!
It even made the front page of the local newspaper for launching Midhurst’s first ever drive thru – and attracting the horsey set from Cowdray aboard their steeds among others.
The food is sumptuous gastropub fare, menus boast pub faves done beautifully as well as more surprising options and upmarket comfort food including woodfired pizza.
