Considering the pub has been welcoming patrons for an incredible 300 years it’s safe to say it knows what it’s doing. The Welldiggers Arms serves up, quite possibly, one of the best roasts in the county as well a very impressive menu the rest of the week.

The façade is pretty impressive too with a stone and slate roof against light coloured bricks, but inside, there are all the trimmings you’d expect of a traditional country pub – tankards hanging above the bar, locals drinking real ales and dogs lying next to roaring fires. The vibe is relaxed and rustic with a hybrid of oak beams next to reclaimed art.

The dining area is particularly spacious and is framed by huge windows that look out onto the South Downs beyond – ideal whatever the weather. But when it does play ball and the sun is out, there’s a large patio and garden primed for alfresco dining and the all-essential summer glass, ok, make it a bottle of rosé to share. The menu changes daily in keeping with the availability of local produce highlights include local pheasant with smoked bacon, pearl barley and pot roast carrots while the bar stocks cask ales, craft beers, local cider and of course a brilliant selection of wine.

There are 14 rooms that fall into one of the three categories – standard, premier and luxury, all with a neutral colour palette with soft touches for full relaxation. As you’d expect, each room as a TV, tea and coffee making facilities with fresh milk delivered daily. Some bathrooms have a roll-top bath, others a walk in shower, all come with Bramley toiletries. Selected rooms have private terraces complete with rocking chais. How’s that for relaxation?
