Review: Cottesmore Hotel, Golf & Country Club

A country club with impressive spa, restaurant and gorgeous golf course, Cottesmore in Pease Pottage, Sussex has got it all going on.

THE LOWDOWN

Cottesmore is a country hotel set on the site of a former farm, which was converted to a golf course in 1975 and now houses a hotel with 26 rooms, clubhouse with oak-beamed bar and restaurant with a panoramic view of the course. There is also a new health club with beauty salon for members and hotel guests.

THE EXPERIENCE

Well, that was a pleasant surprise! Straight off the A23 just past Crawley and I found myself turning into an idyllic tree-lined drive which opened out to stunning views over an 18 hole golf course. I’m not usually partial to a quick round of golf, but the beautiful course at Cottesmore almost has me slipping on a pair of plus fours and gripping a seven iron. Apparently ladies golf is the fastest growing segment in the sport and they run free taster sessions to help introduce new comers to the game. However I made do with watching the tee-off whilst indulging in a large latte and a toasted sandwich in the clubhouse bar.

The hotel has been smartly refurbished following a devastating fire in 2018 so though you don’t get the grand architecture of a historic hotel, you do get something arguably more precious – bang up to date facilities, including a state of the art swanky health club, complete with gym, spin studio, fitness class studio, swimming pool, steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and a full programme of classes, perfect for popping in for Pilates after the school run.

Many of the rooms in the hotel are set around a courtyard and are often booked up for weddings. So if you’re on a romantic couples weekend (lucky you!) and don’t want to inadvertently join the wedding party, my tip is to ask to be overlooking the golf course. Rooms are smart and stylish with a large, comfortable bed with all the usual amenities.

SCOFF & QUAFF

As it was a weekend the hotel was busy with a party, so dinner was a lively affair, but the service was great and the small menu of gastro classics made from locally-sourced ingredients was well cooked and delicious. Breakfast was much more sedate and I enjoyed a quiet Eggs Benedict with fresh juice and the papers overlooking the misty golf course.

TREATMENTS

You name it they do it – the beauty salon has an extensive list of treatments including Elemis & Crystal Clear, Decléor facial and body treatments as well as the usual manicures and waxing. The hours are limited though and its closed on Sunday so make sure you plan accordingly.

ANYTHING ELSE?

Reception is often staffed by Oscar a handsome and slightly grumpy tabby cat who is partial to making himself comfortable in guests rooms. Unfortunately he didn’t join me, but conceded to a small cuddle before I left!

HOW TO GET THERE

Conveniently just 4 miles from Gatwick (although don’t worry not on the flight path!). If you’re driving leave the M23 at Junction 11 and follow the sign to Pease Pottage. At the mini roundabout take the third exit, continue 1 mile and Cottesmore will be on your right hand side. By rail Crawley, Three Bridges & Horsham are the nearest stations and about a 10 minute taxi ride away.

THE MUDDY VERDICT

Good for: Spa trips with a group of friends who want great facilities all on site – wellbeing break in January anyone? Or obviously those who know their Birdies from their Bogeys (nope me neither). Plus, given its proximity to Gatwick it’s a great place to kick off an overseas trip – round of golf, day in the spa and you’re ready to board!

Not for: Those looking for historic grandeur or a quiet couples trip (unless you go mid week), as the hotel is often busy with weddings.

THE DAMAGE

Overnight spa breaks start from £130 per person sharing. Country Club membership from £59 per month.
