Alpine adventure calling!
Summer’s not all about the beach. A mountain break can be a magical experience without a snowboard or salopette in sight. We asked award-winning local travel experts Baldwins Travel Group who they’d recommend and they said Switzerland Travel Centre, are their go-to mountain guys every time. So here are their thoughts on the top 5 reasons to go Alpine…
1. Fancy an active family holiday?
Want to do something fun and different this autumn half term? Switerland is perfect for families that like the outdoors and particularly those with adventurous older kids. Aletsch Arena is beautiful, especially at that time of year. Stay in Bettmeralp and hike alongside the Aletsch Glacier, or Interlaken, another great base for families. There are plenty of other family-friendly ideas, just ask the experts.
2. Want a couples’ break but you’ve done Paris and Prague?
What about a city break in Zürich? Great stuff to do includes; going up the Grossmünster for great views over the city; shopping on the Bahnhofstrasse; cruising on the lake; wandering through the old town with its small shops and boutiques. Go in September and time it with the famous food festival, FoodZürich.
3. What about a guided tour with a difference?
The mountains are perfect for cycle or hiking tours, if you like outdoor fun, and the whole thing is all organised for you. Hiking tours are individually graded giving you an idea of what would suit you best in terms of fitness. There’s a great level of service, which includes ‘Meet and Greet’ at the airport, tour briefing, transfer to start/end of trail, luggage transfer from hotel to hotel, comprehensive tour documentation, English speaking helpline and support throughout.
4. Heard of The Glacier Express?
ell, I say Express, but actually it’s the slowest express train in the world – because, well why rush when the view’s this good? Take an amazing rail journey across the Swiss Alps linking the two famous resorts of St Moritz and Zermatt. Crossing 291 bridges and passing through 91 tunnels, the route with the Glacier Express winds through the most spectacular alpine scenery. There are lots of different packages available for this scenic rail journey, including the full ride or shorter stretches.
5. Insist on snow activities for your mountain holiday?
Okay so you’re not budging on your ski or snowboarding action. Then want to know the best time to book? Well, in the summer is the answer. The new Ski & Snowboard brochure from the Switzerland Travel Centre will be coming out in July, when it can be ordered or viewed online . So the experts recommend booking from August onwards. Booking early often means cheaper flights and there may be early bird offers.
