REVIEW: Poppinghole Farm Spa

Clinical spas not your thing but craving some serious pampering? Say hello to Poppinghole Farm Spa, near Robertsbridge in East Sussex which is so cosy you even get your own cottage.

Poppinghole Farm Spa is not your typical spa – situated down a quiet winding lane about 10 miles from Hastings, it’s the perfect pamper spot for those who love their home comforts. The intimate venue has a collection of lovely private cottages where you can relax and unwind even on a day spa break. There is also a lovely skincare shop within reception to stock up on goodies or gifts.

On arrival we drive through the secure automatic gate and past the resident chickens and horses (its a working farm after all!) and park up opposite a pretty courtyard with a calming water feature at its centre.

The spa has four traditional Sussex-style, luxury cottages that can accommodate up to six guests – you can visit just for the day alone, come with a partner or book the whole site with a full occupancy of 21 guests which would make an amazing venue for a girly birthday or hen treat.

The cottages are homely with the use of the small pool and spa with two treatment rooms situated just across the courtyard and each comes with Elemis products and fluffy white gowns, towels & slippers so you can immediately unwind. Or simply go for a snooze in the peaceful bedroom – why not?

Desparate for a decent brew? Happily the cottages come equipped with fresh milk, tea and coffee, juice and even a thoughtful chocolate treat which was devoured upon arrival (well, it was a long drive).

Fancy a dip? A short stroll across the courtyard, you’ll find the oak framed complex that houses the 10m heated, plunge pool and jacuzzi. The patio doors open out onto a sun spot where you can relax on a lounger should the weather permit.

The spa has an extensive treatment list which must be pre-booked including everything from high -tech Biotec facials to holistic Hopi Ear Candles and simple OPI & Jessica pedis and manis. Other options also include tanning and HD Brows so they offer a full top-to-toe which would be ideal for Brides to Be.

I booked in for a Deep Tissue Massage to soothe my Muddy muscles and was glad I had – the therapist worked really hard to get all my knots out leaving me feeling much looser than when I arrived!

Thankfully Poppinghole isn’t a diet or detox kind of place and there is a sumptuous menu to order from with delights such as Black sesame crusted salmon with teriyaki Sauce, Paninis and Pasta. Weather permitting you can dine outside on your terrace or your meal will be brought to your cottage.

We opted for a delicious home made quiche and salad with a side of sweet potato fries and a very well appreciated class of local rose from Chapel Down. For dessert we chose a decadent Sticky Toffee Pudding alongside a fresh fruit platter (its all about balance).

If you are staying overnight and fancy exploring your locale there is plenty nearby to amuse you. For some history take a trip to Bodiam Castle, (below) or Battle Abbey or for a scenic walk how about Bedgebury Pinetum or the stunning views along the Seven Sisters Cliffs.

There are a number of good pubs and restaurants nearby including The Curlew and Birchwood or try some retail therapy in picturesque Rye.

Good for: Poppinghole is perfect for those who like their spa breaks with relaxing home comforts. A brilliant venue for parties and gaggles of girls who can make the place a pamper palace for the weekend.

Not for: Young families, unless you book out exclusive use so the kids can join in and explore. It’s very much a boutique spa so expect intimate but not extensive facilities.
