Festive feel-good fun in Sussex this season

Get your festive fix with a visit to one of the magical National Trust treasures in Sussex this Christmas.

Standen, near East Grinstead in West Sussex is a beautiful Arts and Crafts family home with Morris & Co. interiors, set in a beautiful hillside garden. Its the perfect place for a bracing winter walk with over 100 acres including ancient woods and misty meadowland. Dogs (on leads) are welcome so wrap up warm and burn off those mince pies!

XMAS AT STANDEN

Feel like a guest of the Beale family and see how they celebrated Christmas at their country home in the 1920’s. Enjoy a trail around the garden, twilight openings and story-time with Woodland Santa. The House is open 11am– 3.30pm daily (last entry 3pm), with occasional Twilight openings (see below).

See the spectacular Standen Christmas tree, themed this year Enchanting Nature. Inspired by William Morris’ designs and animals, the beautifully decorated tree outside in the Courtyard is guaranteed to get you in the festive spirit and make your own look totally inferior!

Twilight Openings, every weekend from 27 November, plus 22 & 23 December til 6pm

See the rooms lit for a Christmas celebration and listen to a local choir singing in the courtyard (joining in with We Three Kings is optional!)

National Trust

Get the kids an audience with the big man Santa in his woodland grotto. They will be enchanted by a magical story in the company of Mr Claus himself and leave with a small gift and a hot chocolate to warm them up. Booking essential.

Nature Trail, 4 December – 2 January

The cheeky Standen dog has stolen everyone’s pyjamas and hidden them in the garden! The kids will soon be running wild with this fun trail around the garden.

Christmas craft shopping, 6 -23 December

Get all your shopping in one swoop here. The Sussex Guild will be selling gorgeous handcrafted items to ensure you shop local this year.

XMAS AT NYMANS

Nymans, near Haywards Heath, West Sussex is a garden lovers’ home for all seasons, with an extensive yet intimate garden set around a romantic house and ruins. It comes alive in winter with tree-lined walks and the fragrance of winter Jasmine within the woods. Again, dogs are welcome on leads in most areas (they might even get a treat). This Christmas the house will be decorated with a sumptuous trees and sparkling lights, try and spot the family’s original decorations (no home-made toilet roll ones here!)

Is it even Xmas without a beautiful wreath on your door? Why not make your own this year at one of the Wreath Making Workshops in the Potting Shed at Nymans. Using all natural materials everything is provided, including tea, coffee and mince pies. Yum!

Percy the Park Keeper’s Winter Wander trail, 4 December – 3 January 2022

Get the kids involved and outside with a trail through the gardens with Percy and his animal friends to give nature a helping hand. Visit the Play Glade to see Percy’s shed and enjoy some festive games.

Meet the real Percy the Park Keeper, 26 December – 3 January 2022

You’ll find him in his shed, where you can stop for a chat, or you can go for a walk with him in the garden to see what he’s planting for spring. He’ll be telling you jokes, singing songs with you and even getting you to help with some of his garden jobs. (any chance he could pop round to the Muddy veg patch and work his magic?)
