Christmas illuminations in Sussex

OK so it's pitch black at 4pm but that can only mean one thing - time for some Christmas lights! Head to one of these gorgeous displays around Sussex for guaranteed festive cheer.

Glow Wild 2020, Wakehurst Place, East Grinstead

Wakehurst comes to life after dark with this enchanting lantern trail, full of surprises and new installations for 2020. You’ll encounter the world’s tallest living Christmas tree decorated with 1,800 lights, as well as celebrate the heroes of the natural world, from plant seeds to fungi to wildlife. You can add a lantern kit to your order so your little ones can make an adorable bumblebee lantern too. Running until Jan 3, book online.

Leonardslee Illuminated, Leonardslee Lake and Gardens, Lower Beeding

The famous silver moon returns once again, to float above the lake at this Grade 1 listed garden in West Sussex. This lovely festive extravaganza includes a delightful trail of Christmas lights and lanterns, spectacular large-scale projections onto Leonardslee House, live music, and even Pathways of Fire and Flame. No idea, sorry, you’ll have to go along to find out. Until Dec 28, book online.

Light Up Wiston, Wiston Estate, near Steyning

An illuminated trail from international artists along the theme of Hope is this year’s offering from Wiston Estate. Set in a gorgeous South Downs location, highlights include an enchanted forest, a rainbow in the dark and the excitingly named Shimmer Tree. Until Jan 3, book online.

Steamlights at Bluebell Railway, Sheffield Park

Ho, ho and thrice ho and another one for luck, because we reckon not even Santa’s sleigh itself is as festive as this new seasonal offering from the charming Bluebell Railway. (Not to be confused with the Santa Specials, which are also going ahead this year) Sparkle, glow and shimmer on a magical steam train covered in thousands of fairy lights. Enjoy music and feast your eyes on a lights display as you chug along. For extra wow factor, book a picnic box for you stuffed with mince pies, cheese and biccies and a roll, and a box for the kids choc-full of sarnies, gingerbread men and, well, choccies. We’re welling up with joy just thinking about it. Until Jan , book online.

Christmas at Bedgebury, Cranbrook, Kent

Surround yourself with sparkle after dark! Just across the border in Kent, Bedgebury will be full of festive cheer. Explore a light maze, look out for giant baubles, and wander beneath tree canopies ablaze with Christmas colour. Spiced cider, mulled wine or hot choc await at the end of your walk. Until Jan 10, book online.
