Spruce it up! Christmas tree farms in Sussex
It's December and that means it's time to drag a 7ft tree into the house and cover it with sparkly plastic! Here's where to go to get your locally-grown spruce or fir.
Furze Firs, Horsham
Let’s just take a moment for that name, shall we? Roll up at Furze Firs and browse your way through the plantation, then once you’ve picked your victim, saw that bad boy down! If you’re going full on lumberjack (flannel shirt optional) you’ll need to BYO saw if possible, if not, it may be a wait to borrow one. Alternatively, choose from the heaps of pre-cut or potted trees. On Friday afternoons there’s a carry-to-your-car service, and for weekends, you’ll need to pre-book. Open 10am to 5pm until Mon 21 Dec. Lordy, imagine leaving it that late.
Sussex Trees, Lindfield and Heathfield
With 150,000 trees between both East and West Sussex locations, there’s probably enough choice at Sussex Trees. Probably. Head to Goddenwick Farm in Lindfield for a full-on festive extravaganza including resident reindeer, donkeys and alpaca, and choose your tree straight from the field or pick one from the barn. At the East Sussex plantation in Five Ashes, it’s a bit more rough n ready – PYO from the huge selection and the staff will hack it down for you. If that sounds like too much effort, just grab one from the barn instead. Order online if you’d prefer your tree delivered.
Catsfield Christmas Tree Farm, near Eastbourne
Choose from five different varieties including low drop and potted trees as well as the gorgeously scented traditional spruce, and while you’re on, pick up a stand, decorations and lights. This one-stop Christmas tree shop also delivers locally so you can order your tree online if you’re, ahem, elf isolating. Open until Christmas Eve.
The Sussex Christmas Barn, Barcombe
A whole barn, devoted to all things Christmas! You’ll find a huge range of freshly cut, home-grown Christmas trees including potted and non-drop numbers and you’ll definitely want to take some time to browse the barn itself, which is a festive paradise of all things sparkly and scented. The cafe will be operating a takeaway services selling delicious hot street food with a festive theme plus hot drinks and, of course, mince pies.
Foxhill Christmas Trees, Lindfield
A family-run fave of Muddy commercial director Sally. Staff at this lovely Christmas tree farm are friendly and helpful and will net your tree and take it to your car for you – bless ’em. Choose from a range of varieties including the Nordmann Spruce, a fantastic non-drop variety, and the traditional Norway Spruce with its distinctive Christmas tree scent. Potted trees and homemade wreaths also available.
Kingsley Farm Christmas Trees, East Grinstead
Prices at Kingsley Farm start at £20 for a decent sized (up to 4ft) spruce, which is less than half of what you’d pay at the supermarket. Plus, your tree will have been locally grown and harvested. A range of sizes in spruce and fir varieties await at this Christmas tree farm – you can also reserve online, and have it delivered if you’re local. For an extra £6 the team will pick up your old tree after Chrimbo and return it to from whence it came. It’s the circle of life, people.
