Sealed with a kiss

An intriguingly named shop, in Petworth, West Sussex but also online, Kissed By Betty has a fabulous range of funky homewares and gifts. We’re talking lampshades, wall art, cushions, candles and more. We like these fun mirrors (£35 each), perfect for a teen.

Ask Ethel

For all sorts of unique and craft-slanted gifts head to Ethel Loves me in Rye for inspiration. They have a gorgeous selection from tree ornaments, stocking fillers and Rowdy & Fancy’s chocolate to upcycled furniture. You might even be able to grab one of their popular refillable decoupage washing up liquid containers (bottom right) to add a touch of class to tackling those Christmas Day pots and pans.

Outside the box

Paint queen Annie Sloan has teamed up with the Sussex home of the Bloomsbury Set – Charleston House to produce a series of themed chalk paints. This set comes with a keepsake box to decorate, an inspiration guide, plus a wax cloth and brushes. £59.95.

Hum dinger

With a workshop just over the border at Cranleigh, but also available online, Simon Pure’s contemporary jewellery often comes with playful and colourful accents. The cute silver hummingbird hovering on a silver chain is £115. It’s also available in rose gold and 9 carat gold. Drop a hint yourself perhaps about the Crumble bracelet (right). They’re £332 each and are studded with six assorted blue sapphire and blue topaz.

Secret Squirrel

Help a Brighton resident or visitor stray from the beaten track with this off-beat guide that includes such treasures as a hidden orchard, a forgotten railway line in the sea, a hidden pet cemetery, and a library in a fridge.

Bag It

Wolfram Lohr’s leather goods are handmade in Hove. Among its range are soft messenger bags for £295, or, they can custom make your heart’s desire – even shoes.

Flower power

For presents for gardeners, scarves, jewellery, ornaments, bird feeders and more besides, drop into the lovely shop at Denmans Garden near Fontwell (there’s a great cafe on site while you’re there).

Fairy Folk

Unique and adorable keepsakes for children (or grown ups), Halinka’s Fairies are handmade in Sussex from wrapped wire and special fabrics like silk and vintage evening dresses. The Christmas selection includes Nutcracker characters, angels, mice and Father Christmas and friends. Bring some magic to a child’s room or hang them on the tree each year. £18.80 upwards depending on size.

Make a splash

Tick off that Xmas list by buying your friends and fam beautiful handmade chocolates, tablettes, truffles and pastilles with distinctive colourful splashes from Arundel chocolatiers Noble and Stace, online or from a variety of Sussex and Surrey suppliers. Some, like the English Sparkling Wine and Brighton and Chilgrove Gin varieties, have an extra boozy Sussex twist. There are even dairy-free chocs. Truffles boxes are £10 – 20. You can also buy vouchers for chocolate-making workshops.

Big apple

Muddy Award-winning Bignose and Beardy cider is donating 10% of its sales over the festive period to Uckfield Food Bank. An even better reason then to get this tasty small batch Sussex product on your Christmas shopping list. Get a taster gift pack of six different ciders for £18, or, check out the mulled cider kits, enamel mugs and party boxes. You can also give a gift subscription.

Beef it up

Sussex Gourmand, which produces beef and venison bresaola, laid on the fabulous canapés for the Muddy Awards winners’ drinks this year. It sells clever canape kits teaming the locally reared meat with artisan crackers and condiments. A great gift for a foodie, or to order if you’re entertaining yourself. Slake your thirst

Sussex is a hot spot for some fantastic gins. Choose from Sussex Dry Gin or an autumnal Hedgerow Gin 9£6 – £39.50 depending on size). There are also gift boxes (pictured, £17) and fun negroni gin baubles (£15) this year. Get it online or from local stockists.
