<p>A pretty, proper village that seamlessly marries medieval history with village convenience – Alfriston&#8217;s shops feel like stepping back in time, characterful and charming and selling goods you actually want! It&#8217;s a historic place – legend has it that St Andrew’s Church dates back to around 1345; it&#8217;s flanked by half-timbered cottages and there are Victorian townhouses here too. There&#8217;s a village green (important!) and Alfriston is situated in the South Downs National Park so there are glorious walks from your doorstep. The coast and the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs are just a hike away.</p>

<p>Alfriston may be small but its appetite for good food is mighty. It has three pubs, several hotels and a number of good restaurants. Your first point of call for a pinot or pint should be <a href="https://thepolizzicollection.com/the-star/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Star</a>&nbsp;(dating back to the 11th century); it’s been lovingly transformed by owner Alex Polizzi (of <em>The Hotel Inspector</em> fame) and her mother, into a lovely restaurant and hotel, and you can just pop in for a drink by the roaring fire or in the walled garden if you prefer. </p>



<p>Thirsty for more? Then head to the grade II-listed <a href="https://www.thegeorge-alfriston.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">George Inn</a> with its timber beams and beer garden. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TavernontheTye/?locale=en_GB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Six Bells</a> is a more modern pub with a large garden that rolls down to the village green. <a href="https://www.smugglers-alfriston.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Smugglers</a> hostsa monthly quiz night and serves up guest ales from local microbreweries. </p>

<p>You have a choice of adorable tearooms here and the best, without argument, is <a href="https://badgersteahouse.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Badgers Tea House</a>, a former Muddy Award finalist. It was the village bakery for more than 200 years, but now&nbsp;serves tea in bone china cups (the only way if you ask us) and delicious freshly baked cakes. It also has a beautiful English country garden – no singing please! On warmer days you can sit outside in the village square and enjoy something sweet with something caffeinated from the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/thesingingkettleteahouse/?hl=en-gb" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Singing Kettle</a>, known for the best scones in the village. </p>



<p>For fine dining head to <a href="https://wingrovehousealfriston.com/restaurant.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wingrove House</a> – it has views over Alfriston’s village green and church. You&#8217;ll find Italian dishes (as well as pasta making classes) at <a href="https://www.poco.wine/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Poco</a> on the high street. <p>If you champion local, independent shops (and if not, why not?) you’ll be right at home in Alfriston. First stop: the Insta-friendly <a href="https://www.muchadobooks.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Much Ado Books</a>, housed in a converted barn – it’s got loads of character and made it into The Times’ list of ‘best browsable bookshops’. </p>



<p>Next stop is Alfriston Village Stores – there’s no website, but you can’t miss it! It still has the original 1891 counter and shop fittings, and sells a great selection of local cheeses, meats, jams, jellies and pastries.</p>



<p>Vintage fashion store <a href="https://www.instagram.com/emmett_and_white/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Dressing Room</a> is ideal to play dress up or hunt for a Goodwood Revival outfit. <a href="https://alfriston-chestnuts.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chestnuts</a> sells jewellery and antiques, while for homeware inspo and gifts, head to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/fernstore/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fern</a>.</p>

<p>Need some R&amp;R? <a href="https://www.thesussexshala.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sussex Shala</a>, a new wellness sanctuary and spa, offers classes, experiences and events run by expert yoga teachers, practitioners and healers. <a href="https://thealfriston.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Alfriston</a> is a charming hotel with a large spa and outdoor pool with beautiful views. </p>



<p>You are embedded in the South Downs National Park here, with beautiful walks from your doorstep. Nearby Cuckmere Haven is a glorious wild swimming spot you can hike to, and Friston Forest is packed with great walks and mountain bike trails. Neighbouring Eastbourne has an annual <a aria-label="Walking Festival (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.visiteastbourne.com/walking-festival" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Walking Festival</a>, held in September. Need a gym? There is a <a href="https://www.bannatyne.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bannatyne</a> in Polegate, a 10-min drive away, as well as <a href="https://www.sussexsleepservices.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sussex Sleep Services</a> &#8211; a specialist clinic if you&#8217;re having trouble with your zzzzs. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community">COMMUNITY</h2>



<p>Alfriston has an active community with a <a href="https://www.alfriston-village.co.uk/alfriston-village-community-information" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">website</a> and lots of groups and clubs – there are societies and clubs for history, horticulture, art, the WI, bowls, cricket and even one dedicated to the church bells. The village green (aka the Tye) hosts a variety of fetes and fairs and the highlight of the calendar is&nbsp;the Alfriston Festival, which takes place each year on August bank holiday. </p>

<p>Alfriston is walking paradise. The South Downs Way passes through the village before splitting into two routes – along the river to Cuckmere Haven with the option of wild swimming, or a shorter route downhill via the Long Man of Wilmington (a dude carved into the chalk) through Jevington. <a href="https://www.forestryengland.uk/friston-forest" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Friston Forest</a> and its beech woodland&nbsp;offer walking, biking and hacking routes. </p>



<p>Wine lovers rejoice, <a href="https://rathfinnyestate.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rathfinny</a> vineyard is dangerously close – just a half-hour walk from the village – with views across the vines and the Downs towards the sea, a restaurant and, of course, great wine. Craving some city action? Eastbourne and Brighton are both around 30 mins drive away.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-culture">CULTURE</h2>



<p>The first property ever bought by the National Trust was the <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/sussex/alfriston-clergy-house#place-opening-times" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alfriston Clergy House</a> – this happened in 1896 and it cost just £10. You can visit the 14th-century home with thatched roof and timber framed walls, plus there&#8217;s a beautiful garden and small orchard. You don’t have to go far for more history –  St Andrew’s Church, next door, dates back to the 1360s and if you time it right you can hear the bells ringing.&nbsp;The <a href="https://www.southdownssummermusic.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">South Downs Summer Music</a> festival, which takes place each July, attracts world-class musicians to concerts in the church. </p>

<p>The average price of a home here is around £730,000. Detached properties will set you back an average £673,667, while semi-detached homes, which are larger here, are around £750,000. Terraced properties fetch an average £620,000. </p>

<p>The village has its own nursery, <a href="https://eastsussexmontessorischool.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">East Sussex Montessori School</a>, which runs in the light and airy Old Chapel Centre and is rated good by Ofsted.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-schools">SCHOOLS</h2>



<p>The local primary, <a href="https://sussex.muddystilettos.co.uk/kids/school-reviews/st-andrews-prep-eastbourne-2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alfriston School</a>, is on the village green and rated outstanding by Ofsted.&nbsp;You’ll need to head to Eastbourne for secondary options, and for indies. <a href="https://sussex.muddystilettos.co.uk/kids/school-reviews/st-andrews-prep-eastbourne-2/">St Andrew&#8217;s Prep</a> and <a href="https://sussex.muddystilettos.co.uk/kids/school-reviews/eastbourne-college-2/">Eastbourne College</a> are part of the same family and share a board of governors. Further afield, <a href="https://sussex.muddystilettos.co.uk/kids/claremont-school-east-sussex-early-years-pre-prep-and-prep/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Claremont</a> is an all-through school with a prep in Battle and senior school in the pretty village of Bodiam.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-kept-secret-nbsp">BEST KEPT SECRET&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Alfriston is one of the oldest villages in the country, and was listed in the Domesday book. Legend has it that in the early 19th century, <a href="https://www.smugglersalfriston.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Smugglers’ Inn</a> was the headquarters for one of East Sussex’s most notorious gangs, with its maze of passageways making an easy escape route should they need it. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute">COMMUTE</h2>



<p>The closest station is Berwick (2.5 miles), with services to Hastings and Brighton. A trip to London requires a change at Lewes and takes around 90 mins.</p>
