Fab new floral workshop parties

Got a late summer festival to go to? Planning a wedding… a girls’ get together… a kids’ party? Get yourself booked onto one of the lovely new workshops from Highgate Florist & Growers in Rotherfield, near Crowborough in East Sussex (also available at a location to suit you).

The Highgate shop is a fixture in the high street but the workshops under the name Flower Fairies Create take place just slightly out of town at the family farm that supplies most of its blooms and also offers a pick-you-own service. The barn on site has been decorated up for the occasion with a summer wedding / fete look – there’s even faux grass on the floor!

Summer indoors

Looks like a hard afternoon’s work ahead…

I went along to try out a crown making workshops run by owner Kerrie Harman whose dad David grows the gorgeous flowers including this spectacular sweet pea arch for her own wedding.

Flower crowns have become the accessory of choice at summer festivals – after all your head’s the one part of you that hopefully won’t get caked in mud. Kerrie has also seen a rise in DIY brides, wanting the knowhow to make their own headgear and table adornments. She even runs children’s parties with crowns for the more capable and the youngest arranging flowers in decorated jam jars.

I found it hard to believe we were going to create a whole crown each from just a strip of wire with ribbons either end and a roll of florist tape but we did! Kerrie showed us what to do, snipping the stems short on our blooms and adding them one at a time with a wind of tape to secure them.

It got a little trickier to handle as my crown got heavier but really the most difficult bit was choosing what to include as Kerrie had spread buckets of fabulous home grown flowers all round the room. I got a bit carried away in fact, deciding to graduate the colour from orangey at one end to pastel pinks and blues at the other.

Others went more for a more woodland look….

And of course Kerrie’s own was neatly packed…

To make more of an occasion of the afternoon there was tea in vintage cups, sandwiches, cakes and fizz on hand. It was a fun and surprisingly relaxing two hours. Of course we also started talking weddings – what we had done/ would do/ liked about other peoples’.

If it all sounds a bit girlie, even in these non gender-specific times, then look out for scheduled pumpkin carving and Christmas wreath making workshops, or request your own event – Kerrie is happy to adapt ideas and blooms to suit any group.

What’s more, Flower Fairies Create can bring a workshop party to anywhere within 20 miles, so if my calculations are correct that means well over the border into Kent, down towards Lewes or Battle and across to Haywards Heath. Prices start from £12 per person.

So here’s me with my finished crown, rocking the Titania from A Midsummer Night’s Dream look.

Now please excuse me, I spy a rather attractive looking gentleman with an ass’s head…
