<p>Good news for soft fruit fans! Spring&#8217;s warm days and cool nights have meant it&#8217;s now boom time for British strawberries. That family favourite is also back on the menu: a pick-your-own jaunt. You know the drill. Sticky mitts, berry-smeared mugs (cameras at the ready!), and maybe, just maybe, you&#8217;ll bring enough home to have a go at jam making. </p>



<p>Ready to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in to some sweet manual labour? Here are some of our favourite Sussex destinations for PYO strawberries and more besides. <p>This family farm has been running for almost 70 years cropping hops, farming sheep and, of course, growing fruit. Nestled in the south of the valley the views are impressive – the perfect excuse to take a rest as you fill your punnet. The season starts <strong>from 6 Jun</strong> with strawberries and gooseberries (they proudly specialise in six varieties). Later on in the season there&#8217;ll raspberries, tummelberries and greengages. There&#8217;s a 1.5km beech hedge maze to roam, and special events including tractor rides and hop tours, as well as plenty of farm animals to see. Finish your outing by stocking up on provisions like freshly laid eggs, farm apple juice, and homemade jam in case you&#8217;ve already scoffed your berry haul. The café has outdoor seating and some of the county&#8217;s best views.</p>

<p>Strawberries are the opening act and they were ready in record time this year, even before May was out. From July there should also be sweet cherries, morello cherries, blackberries and more available. The rest of the farm grows nuts, apples and plums – they&#8217;re harvested commercially but you can still enjoy an apple juice in the shed, and there&#8217;s space for picnicking and enjoying the views. Fun fact: family-run Maynards is the UK&#8217;s longest established PYO fruit farm. Stay tuned for this year&#8217;s dates! </p>

<p>Pick your own is open from July, with fruit and veg including blueberries, strawberries, peppers and marrows all there for the gathering. There&#8217;s also a special farm trail (it&#8217;s flat for pushchairs), and en route you’ll see farm animals from alpacas and goats to sheep, pigs, chickens and ducks. There’s also a farm shop and butchers on site, and a coffee shop overlooking the play area so you can recharge with caffeine and a sweet treat while the kids burn off any surplus energy.</p>

<p>It’s set to be a berrie-tastic summer at this PYO nursery with raspberries, tayberries and loganberries all on the menu and strawberries already cropping. There should also be a selection of veg including asparagus. When it’s time for someone else to do the leg work, the Farm Shop prides itself on only stocking local supplies from artisan breads to dairy products. Worked up an appetite? It&#8217;s worth visiting for the café alone. </p>

<p>Good things come in small packages at this farm which specialises in apples, ready for the picking from August and into September. The list of varieties is impressive: Cox, Russet, Bramley, Jonagold and Idared all star. You can usually stock up on plums and damsons, too. It&#8217;s a working farm so you&#8217;re guaranteed an authentic experience.&nbsp;</p>

<p>How clever is this? An all-weather fruit farm, it offers all the fun of foraging for the juiciest strawberries and raspberries except you&#8217;re covered by poly tunnels. The terrain&#8217;s buggy-friendly, and along with tea and cake (coffee and toasties, too), you&#8217;ll find an ice cream van serving retro Mr Whippys. They open for the season on <strong>6 Jun</strong>, and there should be pumpkins come autumn. </p>
