<p>If you&#8217;ve never explored Great Dixter&#8217;s house and painterly, intimate gardens, you&#8217;re in for a treat. Entry isn&#8217;t free, of course, so if you&#8217;d rather save that for another day, know that you can visit the nursery, shop, and café without a ticket. Plants are propagated on site and with gardeners this gifted to keep and eye on them, they quality should be high. (In fact, Muddy can testify that a divinely scented rose bought over a decade ago is still going strong in far-from-ideal growing conditions!) Need more evidence that this nursery means business? The compost is blended in-house. Since we mentioned the café, we should report that its salads and sandwiches are indeed delicious, while to shop is very hard to resist (hand-crafted chestnut hurdles anyone?). </p>

<p>A whopping 32-acre site seems only fitting given this nursery&#8217;s specialism: sculptural plants that ooze main-character energy. High drama defines a bold selection of topiary and rare trees, palms and bananas. Exotic though they sound, plenty are grown right here, giving them a stronger chance of thriving once they&#8217;re in your care. And don&#8217;t worry, you can also stock up on any kit you need to keep them looking their best. If you happen to be in possession of more land or a larger terrace than you know what to do with, there&#8217;s a design and planting service on site. Muddy reckons this niche garden centre probably scores high on the people-watching front, too! </p>

<p>Top marks for whimsy go to this hidden gem of a nursery. Tucked away down a winding lane in the High Weald, it&#8217;s half secret garden – complete with wildflower meadows, romantic borders and genuinely magical fairy houses – and half plant-lover&#8217;s treasure trove. Head here if you&#8217;re on the lookout for unusual varieties or just fancy browsing an eclectic mix of tools, vintage finds or ceramics. There is of course a café, serving homemade cakes and seasonal lunches. Come for the plants, stay for the arty ambiance and scenic backdrops. </p>

<p>Family-run since the 1960s, this indie garden centre grows a significant number of its plants on site, bedding plants and perennials included. Larger purchases like roses, fruit trees and architectural shrubs are all there to tempt you, along with essentials such as mulch, compost and shiny new kit (hey, if it gets you excited about weeding, it&#8217;s definitely an essential!). You&#8217;ll also find a vibrant programme of events from flower arranging workshops to tastings and BBQs. And yes, there is very definitely a café: Cecil&#8217;s Kitchen (it&#8217;s named after the nursery&#8217;s founder) serves breakfast, homemade teatime treats, and everything in between. There&#8217;s even an in-house butcher. </p>

<p>Yes, you need a ticket to tour these year-round stunning grounds and have a nose around its ever-vital seed bank, and even National Trust members have to pay for parking (nope, it isn&#8217;t the cheapest). However, the first 45 mins are free and with an array of stunning plants and every imaginable horticultural gift in the shop, your wallet may well thank you for the ticking clock. As you&#8217;d expect of Kew&#8217;s Sussex sister site, the plants are beautifully tended, giving them a whopping head start. It&#8217;s a neatly curated selection, and you can always something for a planter or window box, as well as your borders. Head indoors for succulents and the like, as well as a quick cuppa. Not in a rush? Stump up for entry and know that you&#8217;re supporting vital botanical endeavour while gathering inspiration galore. </p>

Instead, you&#8217;ll find a large and ever-alluring choice of beautifully cared for plants, from window-box staples to allotment fillers and venerably gnarled olive trees. Don&#8217;t worry if you&#8217;re aren&#8217;t feeling inspired, either – the staff have an usually good eye for grouping flowers and foliage to romantic effect. Meanwhile, an expanded homeware section has just been given a glow-up, meaning its stock of indoor pots now rivals its always impressive outdoor range. If you&#8217;re after an extra large statement urn, look no further. One extra reason to visit: it has one of the county&#8217;s most impressive selections of sheds, garden studios and summerhouses that you could wish for, all exquisitely furnished to weaken your willpower. Honestly, we&#8217;re moving in! </p>

<p>Celebrating its 10th year in business, this appealingly eccentric hub of all things horticultural takes its inspiration from Victorian and Edwardian gardeners – hence the bowler hats. Its loyal following, however, is rooted in its staff&#8217;s practical know-how and a flair for design that will stand the test of time. It&#8217;s especially good if you&#8217;re after shrubs, perennials or trees but you&#8217;ll find all sort of other enticements, too, including terracotta pots and garden tchotchkes. Keep an eye out for the talks, workshops and courses that contribute towards its community vibe, and don&#8217;t forget to stop for refreshments at the Mayblossom Café. </p>

<p>Part of the family of Tates of Sussex Garden Centres (they have four locations across the county), South Downs Nurseries is a mecca for green-fingered enthusiasts. It&#8217;s one of the largest garden centres in Sussex meaning you can easily lose your other half in there (not that it was on the agenda) but you can reconvene in the caf<em>é,</em> complete with outdoor courtyard for sun seekers. There&#8217;s a rather impressive selection of indoor and outdoor plants, and you&#8217;ll find plenty of staff on hand to answer any questions. After a few laps, the garden furniture is likely to look extra tempting – just as well it caters to a range of budgets. </p>
