Win an all-inclusive stay at The Hawthorns

Win a week's seaside stay for a friend or relative over 60 in this modern retirement home's short stay apartment

Making the move to a retirement home may feel a natural progression for some, for others it’s a huge decision… then there’s choosing one that’s the right fit. At all-inclusive retirement village The Hawthorns in Eastbourne they have a neat solution – anyone thinking of staying can rent an apartment on a month’s trial.

The peace of mind doesn’t end there because whereas retirement apartments have historically been something you buy, Hawthorns has a pioneering rental model. There’s a notice period of just 28 days should a resident change their mind, need to move to more hands-on accommodation, or (lucky them) head off on a year’s round the world cruise. (That’s easier than getting out of your gym or phone contract we suspect!)

To help shout about their trail periods for would-be residents, The Hawthorns have joined with Muddy to give away a week’s holiday stay for up to two people over 60. There’s no obligation for the winner to rent at the home afterwards.

About Hawthorns

The home is all-inclusive so the food, rates, housekeeping and maintenance are covered. Wine is served with the main three-course meal at lunchtimes (the likes of hake with prawn thermidor sauce were on the menu when we visited) when there’s also a self-service salad bar.

It’s a chintz free-zone – no swirly carpets here! There’s a large open-plan dining room and the apartments and bungalows come in neutral shades, ready for residents to add their own homely touches. There are also pretty gardens.

There’s a smart cinema room, library, snooker table and social room with darts, board games etc. Oh and the cruise ship-style atrium has a grand piano (resist the urge to play chopsticks!) There are walking trails around the complex and further afield. Extra activities include anything from bingo to laughter yoga.

In the area

Hawthorns is just a stone’s throw from Eastbourne’s attractive seafront – you can walk, take a public bus from just outside, or use the home’s own shuttle service.

Check out plays, musicals and more at Eastbourne Theatres and the Royal Hippodrome and concerts at the heritage Eastbourne Bandstand. Eastbourne also has one of Sussex’s top galleries, The Towner, which showcases contemporary art including a major body of work from acclaimed Sussex painter Eric Ravilous.

Nearby days out include gorgeous Cuckmere Haven – a good flat walking/wheelchair route, and Beachy Head for fantastic views. Those up to a bit of hiking can even follow a stretch of the South Downs Way. Other day trips in the area can include visiting the rescue animals at Raystede, or the pretty village of Alfriston and lofty Rathfinny vineyard. Herstmonceux Castle, The Bloomsbury Group’s  Charleston House and the opera at Glyndebourne are also within half an hour’s drive.
