Herstmonceux Castle

Muddy says: Explore themed gardens with a castle backdrop, hire a unique wedding venue, or join in the annual Medieval Festival or other fun events

Take a day out to Herstmonceux, where 300 acres of carefully managed woodland combine with beautiful themed and formal gardens, all surrounding a red brick, 15th century, moated castle.

Among several themed areas in the grounds are an Apothecary Garden, Elizabethan Garden, Magic Garden (with giant mushroom seats), Shakespeare Garden (with plants mentioned in the Bard’s plays) and a Wildflower Meadow.

The castle itself one of the earliest examples of a brick built building in England and can be visited on a guided tour.

Look out for family-friendly events throughout the year besides special meals and the like for couples and friends, including the odd banquet! There are also forest schools in the holidays.

Herstmonceux hosts the annual England’s Medieval Festival – a huge summer event in the castle grounds with jousting displays and much more.

Weddings and parties

Several rooms in the castle are available for hire for parties and conferences and you don’t need to be royalty to have a castle wedding. Herstmonceux can host your big day in the ballroom, conference room or Elizabethan room, holding up to 180, 60, or 30 guests respectively, or outside in the cloisters. Medieval-style weddings are even possible during England’s Medieval Festival.

The Herstmonceux Castle Forest School is available for children’s birthday parties.
