Maku, Hastings

Home to snazzy and sustainable accessories, this coastal biz is good for your wardrobe and even better for the planet.

We can all agree that stylish and cosy don’t often go hand-in-hand. Well, cool slippers brand MAKU would be the first to disagree.

A new kid on the fashion block, MAKU was born in 2021 from a tight-knit team’s passion for sustainable materials. Having no experience in the clothing or retail sector, the founders jumped into the biz with a small batch of slippers and have since expanded their catalogue to include bags, hats, gloves, scarves, gilets and rugs.

What sets this brand apart is its material-first ethos. Each product is made from offcut leather and sheepskin – aka quality material that is unnecessarily wasted in the production cycle. The material is sourced directly from Turkey (which has a mahoosive leather market) and handmade in Istanbul in small batches.

As for the designs, the team creates everything right here in Sussex, making sure that the styles are flexible enough to ensure all materials are used no matter the shape or size.

MAKU offers a wide range of cosy staples like its POLIN slip-ons with breathable sheepskin lining and popping colourways or, Muddy’s pick, the FIFI scarf in a vibrant leopard print. Visit the website or their store at The Depo in Hastings by appointment and try to resist the urge to bag everything.
