Newlands House Gallery, Petworth

Based in a South Downs 18th century townhouse, this art gallery focuses on 20th century artists via an array of world-class exhibitions.

Tucked away in the ridiculously picturesque South Downs market town of Petworth, and part of the Petworth Places family, this art gallery feels like a proper hidden gem. Historically regal in a 1700s townhouse, the focus inside is all 20th century — 12 bright, spacious rooms champion the great artists of the 1900s and play host to a shifting schedule of exhibits.

Celebrating modern art in multiple forms, visitors can admire modern and contemporary pieces of photography, textile, paintings, and design. Exhibitions such as  Julian Opie: Collected Works/Works Collected celebrate British works and offer genuinely engaging contributions to art discussions, making Newlands House Gallery a cultural destination well-worth seeking out.

As well as the exhibits, the gallery puts on a schedule of events and workshops, from sketching classes to lectures, which you can check out here. Visitors will also be pleased by the on-site café, an outreach of Petworth’s Hungry Guest food shop, which offers a properly artisan menu of pick-me-ups within the gallery’s tranquil walled garden.
