One Garden Brighton, Stanmer Park
One destination with countless charms. From a magical walled garden to plants and petals galore as well as a market selling artisan local produce and best of all: a restaurant serving delicious dishes with incredible views.
Can one location tick every box for a day out? When it’s One Garden Brighton the answer is very much: Yes. It. Can. When you first step into the walled garden you feel as if you’re heading into a relaxing retreat, where foliage of all varieties is there to greet you. Given that the gardens are the handiwork of landscape architect, Dominic Cole, (who’s notorious for his skills at the Eden Project) it’s no surprise that they’re gorgeous.
Now for a brief history lesson, the garden dates back to 1713 and was originally part of the Stanmer Estate. Its initial purpose was to provide fruit and vegetables for the house and was the playing ground for exotic and unusual plants. But now it’s a hybrid of traditional techniques and contemporary methods that produce the prettiest of plants.
On the topic of food, you can drink in the beautiful views of the gardens while dining inside, or out at the One Garden Kitchen that dishes up high quality seasonal dishes as well as comforting classics and delicious coffee. It’s also ideal for families and the kids can run off steam around the gardens while you enjoy a glass of Plumpton wine.
You can take a taste of One Garden home with you and stock up at the on-site market that has baked goods, deli items and award-winning meat, cheese and wine produced at the Plumpton College campus. It’s also perfect to pick up gifts but predominantly Muddy’s favourite gift of all: the one to self!
Throughout the year there are a range of events and workshops to really get your hands dirty (Muddy style) and learn about horticulture and floristry on your terms, be it part time, full time for a hobby or career change. Each workshop is led by expert tutors from Plumpton College covering everything from cider making to digital skills for garden designers.
