Safari Pizza, Haywards Heath

This vibrant venue serves wood fired pizza with personality (thanks to their rather unique African twists) you’ll also find them at The Cider Tap, Bolney and at various pops around Sussex.

There’s pizza and then there’s pizza – something Safari Pizza know only too well. Their restaurant in Haywards Heath, pizza kitchen at The Cider Tap in Bolney and pop ups at events around Sussex, serves fresh, wood-fired pizza with their own signature style – inspired by African flavours. What on earth is that you ask?

Simply put, it’s hand-stretched dough made the Neapolitan way then it’s your choice to either go classic with your toppings or do things ‘safari style’ and try the likes of biltong, spicy honey, goats cheese et al. There are of course, vegan options and everything is overseen by co-owner Alex who worked as a safari lodge manager in Botswana.
The restaurant is lit with twinkling lights making in the perfect space to enjoy a delicious dessert (again, you can choose from the likes of Italian gelato , Amarula tiramisu or a wood fired brownie with ice cream) with a glass of wine. Speaking of wine, the list at Safari Pizza is quite frankly, epic. Hardly surprising when co-owner Alicia is a trained sommelier and has selected the very finest of grape-based drinks. Yum. There is also an impressive cocktail list with a different special every month.

The Cider Tap in Bolney is hidden away just off the A272, find your way down the road to a fantastic beer garden surrounded by the Wobblegate orchards. Once there you can select an array of ciders made on site and a rotating list of guest beers and ciders. Safari Pizza have taken over their kitchen space serving up their classic Neopolitan pizzas along with Detroit style pizza pies. With a Cidery event space for private hire and showing rugby and other sporting events and a new indoor seating area this is a really exciting addition to the food and drink offerings in Bolney and Sussex.

Things don’t stop there, the team tour the local Sussex area heading to a variety of events and pop ups serving their delicious pizza. Watch out for them at Bolney Wine Estate, Artelium Vineyard (second Friday of the month from Apr 2025) Albourne Estate (part of the Friday Supper Clubs throughout the summer) along with other venues around Sussex.

Local is key here – despite the African theme – and whenever possible the ingredients are sourced from Sussex, yes, the wine too, along with numerous Sussex micro breweries supplying the beers and ciders. While family friendly, it doubles up as an ideal spot for wine-and-a-few-bits-to-share (you know the drill).

Wait, there’s more… the restaurant hosts multiple events throughout the year including pizza making masterclasses, themed wine tastings, including a South African night (whatever else?), Gin tasting and rum  – we’ll see you there!
