The Angel Inn, Petworth

A dog-friendly coaching inn with all the traditional trappings, chic country charm and a menu honouring British heritage.

A former Muddy Award finalist and West Sussex winner in the National Pub and Bar Awards, it’s true that The Angle Inn’s reputation precedes it. This cosy yet chic country pub dates back to the 1700s – like so much of Petworth. It packs a pretty and also powerful punch in the food stakes too. Here you have all the period nooks and crooks you’d expect in a pub of this age, original beams, fireplaces and passageways.

In winter you can cosy up with a large glass of red by the fireplace (and if you’re anything like Muddy pair it with their Hampshire ribeye steak. Come summer, you’ll want to take full advantage of the walled garden, where we’ll be ordering a a glass of Provence rose to enjoy against the magnolia blooms.

Food wise the focus is all on local produce and of course, incredible taste. They deliver both through their elevated pub classics – think burgers, fish and chips, scampi and Caesar salad as well as pork chops, sea bream and gazpacho as well as the all essential Sunday roast. On selected dates you can order a burger and a beer for £20, or take advance of Fizz Fridays with a bottle for £20, or two glasses for £12 and there’s Locals Night with a special set menu.

Hungry for more? There are rooms upstairs complete with luxury touches including contemporary marble bathrooms, coffee machines and the option to include some ‘add-ons’ such as a bottle of fizz, gift hamper or flowers. Best of all, you only have to head downstairs to the pub in the morning for a delicious breakfast with produce from The Hungry Guest featuring fresh bread, local sausages and eggs plus seasonal fruits.

We’ll see you at the bar, ours is a G&T.
