The Eight Bells, Hawkhurst
This gorgeous, country pub on the Kent / Sussex border is perfect for a hearty post-walk lunch or cosy dinner.
Situated on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Hawkhurst, just on the Kent side of the Kent/East Sussex border, The Eight Bells is an 18th century pub turned real foodie (and Muddy!) favourite.
Very much a traditional English joint, it was taken over by James and Annie Rogers and given a full and rather gorgeous refurb with a cosy, welcoming feel. Add to that a menu heaving with cosy and welcoming food, as it was recently named winner of the Best Meat Roast Dinner in the Knorr Professional’s Great British Roast Dinner competition. The winning dish was a rump of local beef served with all the trimmings, if you were wondering!
As well as award-winning roasts, the lunch and dinner menus here – which change regularly with the seasons – are fresh, and offer ‘rustic country’ food. Think delicious burgers from local beef, Harveys beer battered cod loin, and sticky toffee pudding. Steak Thursdays are also popular, with the option to choose your cut, sauce, potato and side. There is also a takeaway option with a new menu coming soon. And to go with? A wide selection of local and national real ales, delicious wines and great lagers.
Out for a hike with the pooch? The Eight Bells is the perfect spot to relax after a walk (dogs are welcome in the bar and garden). Alternatively, why not make a day of it and tie in a trip to one of Muddy’s favourites Bodiam Castle or Bodiam Boating Station. For warmer days there is a beautiful beer garden with a covered seating area, outdoor heaters and play area for children.
