Everyone knows that passion begets brilliant businesses. It’s no surprise, then, that Louise Flaxman’s childhood obsession with making scents in her grandmother’s garden blossomed into The Greatwood Candle Company.

The founder has always been fascinated with candles but finally leaped into the scent world in 2017 with a humble ‘make your own kit’. Today she sits on a blooming biz with over 10 scents, handcrafted and poured in her Oast House kitchen in Battle. Each scent takes inspiration from the Sussex coast (sniff the citronella and lemongrass blend for a shot of the beach) and the country (sandalwood and cassis capture the rich woodlands of our county).

For Louise, fragrance comes second only to quality. As all dedicated candle collectors know, not all wicks burn the same. That’s why Louise uses a toxin-free mix of coconut and rapeseed oil, avoiding paraffin, soy, palm, beeswax and synthetic nasties. Style is also high on the agenda with chic brown and gold packaging that makes each jar ready for gifting. Reed diffusers, room sprays, hand and body lotions and washes are also part of the range, all made using the same vegan and cruelty-free method.
