The Halfway Bridge, Lodsworth, West Sussex

Fancy food and luxe rooms in a renovated 17th century coaching inn, surrounded by the South Downs.

Smack dab in the sensational South Downs National Park is The Halfway Bridge, purveyor of top class meals and luxury bedrooms — and boasting a 250 year heritage. The building started out as a 17th century coaching inn, based as it is between the market towns of Midhurst and Petworth, but has been recently renovated into a modern pub with a good mix of old charm and contemporary flair.

For dining, the interior is simple and cosy, and there’s a leafy garden and shaded terrace for sunnier months. The wine list is extensive and full of local Sussex vintages — full points there. Then the most important bit (i.e., what to put in gob): it’s fancy dining, but don’t be put off by the menu’s mention of mousses and emulsions, even a gel… it’s more delicious than pretentious, and there’s a good balance to please everyone (burgers and fish and chips for the non-adventurous). There’s also a kids’ menu, and sandwich list.

If you’re staying the night, there are eight cushy rooms to choose from, and a very pretty shepherd’s hut. You can also rent a luxury beach hut, although this is over in West Wittering.
