THE PIG-in the South Downs
The Sussex arm of the legendary hotel group where the focus is on fine dining, gorgeous interiors and providing fabulous rustic charm – all set in the bucolic rolling hills of the South Downs.
You’ve probably heard of THE PIG. The indie hotel chain has fast become one of the coolest places to visit in the UK, with its excellent foodie credentials and a glittering client list that is the envy of most establishments. Well, the latest PIG in the litter is no exception – and it’s housed at the stunning Grade II listed Madehurst Lodge, near Arundel, deep in the heart of the South Downs.
Overlooking its signature vineyard (more on that later),THE PIG-in the South Downs is home to a chic collection of rooms spread over the main house, the stable yard buildings and the Field and Garden wagons, all nestled around the building’s original courtyards. Expect classic PIG decor here: velvet Chesterfield sofas, roll-top baths, wood-panelled walls and walk-in monsoon showers abound. The bespoke Garden Wagons and Field Wagons come with all the mod cons too, with log burners, private terraces and outdoor showers – perfect for a romantic getaway.
As with every PIG, the walled Kitchen Garden and greenhouse restaurant are the beating heart of this new property (they’re not called restaurants with rooms for nothing). Anything that can’t be grown in the gardens is sourced from the best producers within a 25-mile radius, and for the first time in the brand’s history, 4000 Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier vines have been planted to create a Sussex vineyard. Apparently the first harvest is due in 2022, so we’ll be making our booking in the hopes of a tipple or two…
Madehurst is the perfect location for a South Downs stay, with Chichester, Arundel, Petworth, Midhurst and the coast all within easy reach.
