The Royal, St Leonards

Within three years of opening, this beautifully British, down-to-earth gastropub earned itself a Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand, this may be a place for proper grub but it’s a gourmet delight

Unpretentious and unassuming this ‘old boozer’ pub (their words, not ours) prides itself on keeping things low-key but when it comes to the taste of their impressive menu, it’s anything but. The perfect pitstop for anyone visiting, or living in the Hastings area, it’s a foodie destination in its own right.

Sample menus give just a hint of what’s on offer, as the pub prides itself on offering seasonal ‘unfussy’ dishes (again, their words) such as salt god croquettes with saffron aioli, onglet, pickled walnuts, horseradish and chips and elderflower panna cotta, gooseberries and candied pistachios. A tightly packed menu that is sure to pack a punch!

Oooh and did we mention the impressive wine list? Real ales? Draft Beers? No. Well they’re there in all their glory and guest beers appear on a blackboard at the bar, wherever else would you expect in a proper pub?

Front of house is run by James Hickson who has a strong history in hospitality having worked at The Canton Arms, St John and Moro and also Great Queen Street in Covent Garden where The Royal’s chef and co-owner Sam Coxhead is also an alumni.

They both champion a lively yet relaxed atmosphere at the pub which dates back to the 1860s with warm service and the decor in calming pea greens and duck egg blue complete with vintage French adverts on the walls and dark wood tables.

Walk-ins are welcome, but booking is highly recommended. You won’t want to leave, or at the very least return again, and again.
