Tillingham, Peasmarsh

Set within 70 acres of rolling Sussex hills and woodlands this natural and biodynamic farm with a vineyard and Green Michelin Star restaurant near Rye, is a dream destination for wine tasting, food and overnight stays.

When the wine is as good as it is at Tillingham, Muddy has often considered moving in! While we haven’t yet mastered the art of making that happen, we’ll settle for the next best thing: staying overnight.

At the heart of the farm  (that dates back to the 13th century we’ll have you know) there’s the former hop barn that’s been converted into 11 gorgeously cosy rooms including three dog friendly options. As a rather clever and modern move, there are no TVs (just radios) in the rooms which is in keeping with the farm’s ethos around a tranquil and immersive experience where you can properly unwind – that was unwind not unwine! For the warmer months of May -October you can stay in a Bell Tents with the right level of comfort and the right level of connection with nature.

The vibe at Tillingham is about being natural and open, which is no doubt why you’re surrounded by wild flowers, chickens roaming free and incredible views everywhere you turn. You can look out at the 70 acres of views along the Tillingham River valley, admire Rye from a distance and even see the sea and Romney salt marshes. Best seen with a glass of vino in hand.

Speaking of products of the grape based variety, wine tours and tastings run daily or you can head to the bar to drink in the results of Tillingham’s philosophy of marrying the latest technological while championing ancient traditions of farming and winemaking. There’s a wine tasting room and shop but you’ll spend most of your time by the bar looking out at the views. You’ll want to order a mini wine flights at the bar – 3 tasters for £15, served all day as well as a Happy Hour 5-6pm which includes pizza and a glass of wine or local beer for £15.

Food wise you can tuck into produce from the farm and local area in the Michelin Green Star Restaurant. You’ll want to try the five-course tasting menu featuring produce from the walled garden, nearby farms, meat reared on Tillingham pastures and fish caught at Rye Harbour. Then you’ll want to do it all again and come back for the Sunday roast. Want something more casual? Wood fire pizzas are available all year round, you can enjoy outside in the summer and in the bar come winter. There’s regular live music on evenings and at weekends and in December on the first Friday of every month they’ll be a DJ. But of course the understated luxury is available all year long at Tillingham.
