Wouldn’t You Though?
Think shell art and you’ll probably think of something like a crinoline-wearing lady fashioned from cockles with glue oozing between the joins, available from various tacky seaside souvenir shops. But looky here at what stylish shell-based jewellery The Silvery in Lewes and its online shop have for you.
Owner Jules Asch uses actual shells and coats them in silver using a process known as eletroforming. She’ll even cover your own found items for you to create something personal.
I’ve always preferred silver to gold myself as I think it has a more contemporary look and if you want to bring it even more up-to-date you can opt for a statement piece with a leather strap rather than a chain like this Auger Shell Pendant (7-8cm, £50) which is an early entry on my birthday list…
Or the Turitella, (£50 for the 7cm version or £30 for the 3-4 cm one).
I spotted someone wearing this skeletal Bear Conch Slice pendant (around 6cm, £50) at a gig at the weekend and it added a touch of drama to a plain top.
Jules doesn’t only do shells. Other natural objects she gives the silver treatment include leaves and sycamore keys, as used in this popular pendant (£40).
There’s also this feather brooch (around 6cm, £45)
The Silvery also produces earring and bracelets. If you want a special present for an older child or teen, perhaps even a ‘for later’ present for a newborn girl, I think the shell charm bracelets (£110 for this five shell version) are a lovely idea. You can also buy charms individually.
Because of the lead-in time for orders it’s a little late for Mothers’ Day unless you can get down to the shop but these are perfect for gifts and have a personal feel if you live on the Sussex coast. You can even direct your visitors here for a classier kind of souvenir.
