<p>The best place to soak in all the glorious autumn colour is <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/sheffield-park-and-garden" target="_blank">Sheffield Park and Garden</a> (above) but you can involve, and entertain your sproglets too. As a more active form of I Spy, the park provides children&#8217;s spotter sheets and there are colour-wheel installations to help them hunt for bronzes, golds, reds, purples et al while you enjoy nature’s palette.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. Find the last of the flowers in bloom&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>Just because the temperates are dropping that doesn’t mean you won’t see flowers in Sussex &#8211;<a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/nymans" target="_blank"> Nymans</a> has every right to brag because, well into late October, selected flowers continue to be their beautiful blooming selves, including the Salvias surrounding the rose garden and hickory, liquidambar and acer trees. <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. Pay homage to 70s flower power</strong></h2>

<p>A great idea for a rainy day, and for anyone nostalgic for the 70s. <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/standen-house-and-garden" target="_blank">Standen</a>  (above) has a special Flower Power exhibition that pays tribute to the ultimate era from fondues to Fuzzy Felts, enjoy a snapshot of life in the 70s, against the backdrop of Standen’s trendy Morris &amp; Co designed walls and textiles. Inside Standen House they’ve recreated a 70s room set by Morris &amp; Co, with their ground breaking Triad collection, and a contemporary design space.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>4. Go on a guided deer w</strong>alk</h2>

<p>October isn’t just about pumpkins… even though you can see them growing at the cottage garden at <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/alfriston-clergy-house" target="_blank">Alfriston Clergy House</a>, (open Wednesdays and Thursdays). The garden has traditional apple tree varieties in the orchard laden with fruit. Sadly the blackberries started early this year but the fruits of the kitchen garden’s harvest will also be at Standen this autumn.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Anyone who regularly looks at Instagram will know the new trend for taking ‘golden hour’ selfies at sunset is showing no signs of stopping. Take your selfies (and other pictures) against the beautiful backdrop of the medieval moated <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/bodiam-castle" target="_blank">Bodiam Castle</a> (above), and at <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/nymans" target="_blank">Nymans’ new Garden in the Ruins</a> – where there’s gothic stone window spaces and rust coloured planters. You can also shoot views of the Weald at the top of the acer steps in <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/standen-house-and-garden" target="_blank">Standen’s&nbsp;Arts and Crafts garden</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>7. Be inspired by autumn bakes</strong></h2>



<p>Time for a spiced toffee apple cake? The National Trust have shared <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/recipes/spiced-toffee-apple-cake-recipe" target="_blank">their recipe  to bake at home</a>. But if you’d prefer to eat out, you can have a slice and try a pumpkin soup after an autumn walk at Nymans, Standen, Bateman’s, Bodiam, Petworth House, Birling Gap and Sheffield Park.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>8. Make your walks immersive</strong></h2>

<p>You can see all the autumn colours springing up over Sussex but you can get a little more observant at <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/nymans" target="_blank">Nymans</a> (above) and spot chestnuts ripening on the trees, fruiting fungi and see the plums and damsons and traditional orchard apple varieties.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>9. Take up a new craft</strong></h2>



<p>A guided walk at <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/standen-house-and-garden" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Standen</a> is one thing, but this season you can watch demonstrations on how to spin wool. The East Grinstead Spinners will show you the way &#8211; and maybe even inspire you to take it up. If not, you’ll still enjoy watching and may be tempted to try out another wool-related craft.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>10. Be snap happy</strong></h2>



<p>This is the season to snap spectacular Autumn colour! If you’re lacking a little confidence in your picture-taking skills then sign up to <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/events/a2be17e7-e473-480a-96a8-7f6c70a2af63/pages/details" target="_blank">Sheffield Park’s Outdoor Photography Workshop</a>.
