<p>It may be petite, but Petworth in West Sussex certainly packs a picturesque punch. Nestled in the South Downs, it&#8217;s just an hour’s drive from London and 30 mins from the coast. The former market town’s cobbled streets house beautiful cottages (much of the original period 16th century housing remains) and highbrow indie businesses&nbsp;– (you won’t find any chains here apart from the Co-op). It’s not exactly edgy or cool, but it doesn’t need to be, it’s quintessentially British. There’s a strong sense of community and an equally powerful hub of activity from a monthly film club, concerts, an annual literary festival and the Petworth Fair and a monthly farmers’ market. And all in the shadow of the stunning Petworth House the&nbsp;late 17th-century Grade I listed country house.</p>

<p>The walk-in cheese room at Muddy favourite, <a href="https://sussex.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/the-hungry-guest-petworth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Hungry Guest Deli</a> (pictured) is famous locally and the deli stocks local artisan delights with its butchers, fishmongers, bakery, while <a href="https://thehungryguest.com/hg-gallery-cafe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Hungry Guest Café</a> at the Highlands Gallery offers laid back al fresco dining. For a nostalgic treat, there’s traditional sweet shop <a href="https://www.facebook.com/cococafeuk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Coco Café and Sugar Lounge</a> which also doubles up as a café serving baked treats. </p>



<p>When it comes to restaurants it’s very much a case of quality over quantity, <a href="https://estreetbarandgrill.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">E. Street Bar &amp; Grill</a> offers modern dining with a focus on grilled dishes and locally-sourced meat and fish. Central gastropubs include <a href="https://badgerspetworth.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Badgers Petworth</a> and <a href="https://www.angelinnpetworth.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Angel Inn</a> with medieval origins and where meat should feature in your order. All your grape-related needs will be met at <a href="https://www.henningswine.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hennings Wine Merchants</a> and the <a href="https://www.roebuckestates.co.uk/english-sparkling-wines/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Roebuck Estates&nbsp;HQ</a>.</p>

<p>The annual <a href="https://www.petworthfestival.org.uk/">Petworth Festival </a> sees locals come together to celebrate the best of British music and literature. On Tuesdays, the <a href="https://arena.westsussex.gov.uk/-/petworth-library#/?location=Petworth%20Library">library</a> hosts a knit and natter morning, and on Fridays those with little ones can join forces for a pushchair friendly walk around Petworth Park in the <a href="https://www.petworthparksports.co.uk/Events/Calendar/ViewSeries?id=1154">Buggy Walk</a>. <p>The star attraction is <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/petworth-house-and-park" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Petworth House</a> a country house run by the National Trust sitting pretty in 700 acres of parkland complete with roaming deer. </p>

<p>There are multiple galleries to choose from, but Muddy’s pick is <a href="https://newlandshouse.gallery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Newlands House Gallery</a> that focuses on photography and contemporary art while at <a href="https://www.ottocento.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ottocento</a> it’s all about fine art.&nbsp;In the centre of the town is <a href="https://www.leconfieldhall.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Leconfield Hall</a> and the grade II listed former market hall also operates as a film house.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.petworth.w-sussex.sch.uk/web" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Petworth Church of England</a>&nbsp;and nearby&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fittleworthschool.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fittleworth Church of England Village School</a>&nbsp;primaries were both rated Good by Ofsted. Just south of Petworth in East Lavington is <a href="https://www.seaford.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Seaford College</a>&nbsp;which is a highly-regarded boarding and day co-ed for ages 11 &#8211; 18 yrs.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.petworthparkcricket.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Petworth Cricket Club</a> boasts some of the best views of the South Downs and of Petworth Houses’s landscaped gardens. It’s been going since 1840 and has a women’s team too.&nbsp;</p>
