It's the season for kicking up piles of leaves and splashing through puddles, and we've raided Sussex's best boutiques, plus a few haunts further afield, to find the ultimate cosy footwear for those post-Sunday-lunch walks.
Bugatti Black Biker Boots, £100, Jojo Boutique
True story folks, in the Dr Martin craze of the early 90s Muddy was denied fashionista status as the fabled yellow-stitched ankle boots were deemed ‘too clumpy’. Since then, I’ve been drawn to black biker-style boots like a moth to a clumpy flame, and these from Bugatti tick all the boxes and then some. Reptile print! Fur lined! No impractical tottering on a spiky heel! Just take my money, Jojo, OK? Available in UK 4.5 – 7.5.
Orinoco 2 Hi Warmlined Leather Boots, £125, Clarks at County Mall
Did somebody say ‘equestrian chic’? These low-heeled beauties are pure countryside glamour, just begging to be teamed with skinnies, a chunky knit and an artfully slouched beanie. The leather upper is warmlined to keep your tootsies toasty warm, too. Available in black or tan, and in UK 3 – 8. Try before you buy – you know, the old-fashioned way – at County Mall.
Birkenstock Bryson Natural Leather Boots, £165, The Shoe Gallery
These beauties feature the iconic cork-latex footbed beloved of your summer Birks, meaning they’re likely to be the comfiest boots you own. We love the textured leather too, very rustic. Hot tip – Lewes-based The Shoe Gallery has a range of uber-hip Fly London boots in various sizes on sale, so if you’re passing by and want to add to your collection, you might just get lucky.
Tracker Hi FG Boots, £195, Vivo Barefoot
I’m a big fan of Vivo Barefoot and in the summer I genuinely live in their wide, thin-soled flexible shoes. Come autumn and winter, though, I switch to more conventionally cushioned soles but these Tracker Hi FG boots could be the future of my autumn and winter walks. Barefoot is billed as better for us, and for the environment, and Vivo’s a B-Corp meaning it’s rooted in sustainability and regeneration. Unusually for ethical shoes, these look decent too.
Hunter Speckle Wellies, £80, Anthropologies
Aaaaaand now for something a little different. Vogue has declared the chunky welly one of the must-have trends for AW20/21 and who are we to argue? Admittedly the fashion bible’s picks were typically outrè, but luckily these trad green numbers nail the trend without quite so much ‘flamboyance’. I’d totally kick up a pile of leaves in these.
