Unless you’re a kite-surfer who frequents the Sussex coast, (and Muddy is not quite ambitious enough to master that sport), kite flying feels like it’s reserved for Victorian families or Mary Poppins films. But like with all things retro, it’s having a bit of a renaissance.

Which is why Muddy caught up with Brighton resident and master Afghan kite maker, Sanjar Qiam, who shared his ideas for getting all of the family involved in kite flying as well as how to make your own kite and most importantly, where to fly it locally.

Where is best to fly kites in Sussex?

There are so many options on the beach, but obviously, easier if they’re quieter. I like Stanmer Park, lots of space to move and run around. Devil’s Dyke has some of the best views and some stronger winds once you’ve mastered the basics. Eastbourne has lots of spots, Butts Brow is a good one. And then Cissbury Ring near Worthing and Harting Down on the West Sussex and Hampshire border.

What can parents do to encourage kids to be interested in kites?

Take their screens away! But if that proves too difficult at least strike a bargain where they give up a few hours of screen time in exchange for park time and ice cream. Invite their friends to join you and fly a kite together. Make it a family activity, you can all get involved in building and flying a kite.
Try to choose a sunny day, don’t drag out kids on a rainy day to fly kites, that will dampen their interest.

Why are kites significant in Afghanistan?

Afghanistan’s history of kite flying goes back 800 years – it has become a national pastime, it’s accessible to everyone which makes it so popular. Afghan Kites are made of the simplest material; some string, bamboo spars, tissue paper/or any sheet material. Kites were banned by the Taliban and we want to fly kites as a sign of solidarity with Afghans and to share Afghan culture.

What are your favourite places in Sussex?

I live in Brighton and we’re spoilt for choice for food! If you like Indian food, Manjus is really good and Planet India, my favourite restaurant is Red Snapper. Pub wise it’s Great Eastern and Bison Beer. Easy Tiger do excellent Indian Street food. I spend a lot of time with the kids in Queens Park and Preston Park is really nice if you want to go for a stroll, a coffee and visit the rock garden.
